I do not know how this kidd got drafted so late. I am amazed that we got him. some people really thought he would be picked 17 by NE and some thought he would go to bucs and if all that fell he would come to us. well he came to, just not pick 27, lol

I see where he is rated as a late 4th round pick. Not too shabby for the late 7th.

I see some nuts on youtube clips about him saying he should go in the first.

this kidd put a hit on AJ green. he rushes QB's and he can sack and wrap up. NFL says he will be a great back up for now but will take over. Then we have picked the right guy, someone to back up abraham and then when abe leaves this guy really could take over.

I do like sidbury, but this guy is really good.

As a South Carolina fan, I can tell everyone here we got an absolute steal.

Matthews is one of the hardest working individuals I have ever known. Coming out of high school, he was pretty highly regarded, but a lot of analysts wouldn't shut up about his narrow shoulders and how he just didn't have it as far as the physcality. He turned into an animal in Columbia. He is a class act and he is going to work his tail off. When he finally got that should cast off during his senior year, he turned it up to another level. I am stoked to have him in Atlanta. An absolute steal.

Scouting Report:

Matthews is a high-energy guy with great hands who will be able to serve as a backup 4-3 strongside defensive end. His ceiling is limited due to lack of power to be productive against the run and explosiveness to rush the quarterback. Uses his hands extremely well against the run and pass to keep blockers off his body and to disengage and uses the swim move to counter. Susceptible to being blown off the ball by the double-team or walled off by physical run blockers. Not overly comfortable in coverage or out in space. Still, Matthews' motor will land him in the middle rounds.

He's a projected backup. Your opinion is bias anyway since youre a SC fan.

forget it being bias. the guy is right we got a steal. I believe everyone forgot about this kidd. so NFL says he will be a excellent back up, that s great for us. we needed someone to train under abraham not someone to take over on day one. and none of the DE in this draft could take over in day one and be good at it. cliff is a great one to add to our depth.

You're story. It's really cool, bro. But plenty of players, especially this late in the draft, get picked as "projected backsups" and are just fine. Besides, are we really expecting him and blow the doors off the place? Yeah, me neither. Point being is he's a great pickup and I know he's going to be a good player for us.

Some of the reason the Falcons wanted him:

Senior defensive end who is an honors candidate in his final campaign after earning second-team All-SEC honors in 2009... team captain who is listed on the preseason Lott Trophy, Nagurski and Lombardi watch lists... is a consensus preseason first-team All-SEC selection... considered one of the hardest-working, best-effort players in recent memory... possesses tremendous quickness and athleticism and superior overall ability... did not participate in the spring while rehabbing from shoulder surgery... has played in 37 games over the past three seasons, including 33 starts, most among the returning players... has accounted for 105 career tackles including 17.5 tackles for loss and 10.0 sacks.

given the Weight Room Effort Award for the defense

earned the Everyday Effort Award
