Falcons’ Jerry, Peters expected to battle for starting job

By Dan Parr

The Falcons will have an intriguing position battle at defensive tackle if training camp starts on time this year. While Jonathan Babineaux holds down the three-technique spot, Peria Jerry and Corey Peters are expected to compete for the starting spot at nose tackle.

Peters, a third-round pick in 2010, started 15 games last season. Meanwhile, Jerry, the 24th overall pick in '09, rotated in with the sub package, but as one source recently said, the Falcons didn't spend a first-round pick on Jerry for him to be a situational backup. It's expected that Jerry will get a chance to win the starting job even though Atlanta was pleased with Peters' performance last season.

Jerry missed all but two games in '09 as a knee injury cut his rookie season short. The team has said he was never 100 percent last season, when he made nine tackles and two sacks. Expectations always have been high for Jerry, and he'll be under pressure to deliver after a healthy offseason.
