Yards or Points?

Recommended Posts

We've talked about this before. Just another way that statistics can lie. Still it amazes me the NFL still ranks offenses/defenses by yards and not points. I mean, what ultimately counts? If you give up 500 yards and no points, gain only 100 and kick a field goal, you still win the game.

The Falcons are ranked a paltry 16th in the NFL in both offense and defense in terms of yards. In terms of points, #5 and #5. Stick that in your trophy case.

I follow a lot of pro sports and have always been a bit of stats geek and I can tell you that the NFL's team stats are so deceiving. I don't have to tell you that total yards are affected by turnovers, penalty yards and return yards. So in other words, you can have a team that is good at causing turnovers, doesn't take too many penalties, forces the opposition to take many penalties, and has a dangerous return game - all of these factors actually penalize total offensive yards.

So give me points scored any day of the week. As for actually meaningful stats on offense, I think the ones that are revealing are yards per play and red zone efficiency.

I forgot to add 3rd down conversion rate as an important offensive stat - we've seen that this year! It keeps the chains moving and your defense can rest.
