What is your definition of an "Elite" quarterback?

I have said all along that it is too soon to label Ryan as elite. He is still young and still developing. However, I am becoming conflicted because I view an elite qb as one that an opponent fears whenever he has the ball in his hands. It is something that the stats support but it is something that you don't need stats to realize it, you just watch them play.

Would you ever call a close game over with the ball in Brees', Manning's, or Brady's hands and time left on the clock? Do you ever think that when their offenses are on the field that 3rd and longs are longshots? You tend to assume they will make something happen because they very often do.

I am that way with Ryan now. I just assume he will make something happen. I realize he still needs more experience but since they have let him loose I realize he is closer to the 'E' word than I realized.

Well like everyone else I know if we're down and Ryan's got the ball in his hands with time on the clock...

I feel very good about it.

One thing I hope I don't see but would definitely put Ryan into the 'Elite' category would be for us to be trailing multiple TDs going into the 4th/final 7 minutes of the game and Ryan bringing us back from that.

Again I hope this is something we don't see because my heart can only take so much stress.

Here is my fool-proof formula for determining an elite QB smile.gif :

It's harder to define "elite" now because there are so many teams passing the ball efficiently.

There are 17 QBs with a rating of 90.0 or higher right now.

There are 13 QBs with a TD/INT ratio of 2/1 and 7 with a ratio of 3/1.

There are 9 QBs with a completion percentage of 65% or better and 21 with a completion percentage of 60 or better.

There are 9 teams on pace to throw for 4,000 yards.

So.....lot's of really great performances going on with QBs.

I say the sure way to become considered "elite" is to be one of those guys fitting into most of those categories and win a Super Bowl.

You are right. That would add to his dangerous title. I think he is capable of doing it even though we haven't seen it yet (at least not that his old man can remember).

Ryan brought the falcons back from a early fourth quarter 14 point deficit last year against the Giants, tied the game, unfortunately Eli got the ball first in OT and he never had a chance for a gamewinning drive.

Well let me see:

Joe Montana

Steve Young

Roger Staubach

Terry Bradshaw

Doug Williams

Tom Brady

Warren Moon

Peyton Manning

Ken Stabler

Dan Fouts

Dan Marino

John Elway

Randal Conningham

Kurt Warner

Mick Vick

Matt Ryan - will be

Joe Theisman

Jim Kelly

Johnny Unitas - only heard about him

Aaron Rogers - will be

Josh Freeman - will be

Brett Fayve - even though he's a drama queen

Not necessarily in that order. Are there more?

We came back from two TD's down in New York (was 31 to 14 at the 7-minute mark Sun Tzu mentions) last year. But we still lost in OT, so it's not exactly the most memorable of comebacks. -_-

This ones easy for me I believe you can tell elite QBs in the last 2 minutes of a game with the game on the line. You can tell everything then his passing accuracy abillity, leadership, lining people up in the right spots ability to read defences under pressure to do whatever he deems needed at the time to get you the score to win the game **** I've just described what Matt Ryan has been doing this year.

You either have elite stats, or post-season production, or combo of two.

Matt Ryan is on his way to being elite. But he's either got to have even better numbers or we have to win a couple playoff games. I think if Matt Ryan wins a couple of playoff games, and imagine if we have HFA and get to Super Bowl, he will clearly be considered elite

And it will further highlight the fact that he has the 2nd highest win percentage in the league after Tom Brady
