Falcon Freddie
Commenting on Jeff Schultz's AJC article after the Ravens game (see link below), things certainly could be much different this season, and fortune does indeed play a role. Purportedly, in evaluating candidates for promotion, Napoleon Bonaparte of course evaluated the skills and military aptitudes of the officers, but there was one question which always concerned Bonaparte: "Is he lucky?"The Atlanta Falcons have finally found a general manager in Thomas Dimitroff who is not only knowledgeable and decisive, but is also lucky. Prior to the 2008 draft there was a coin toss to determine who would get the #3 pick of the draft, the Falcons or the Raiders. Dimitroff called "tails," and that is what came up. I believe that if the Falcons had lost that toss, everything that Schultz said in his article (Dorsey, Henne, et. al.) would have come to pass. It's not just coin tosses. Despite the hard analysis that undoubtedly went into these decisions, there weren’t any guarantees that Ryan, Coach Smith, and a host of other drafts and trades would not turn out to be busts. But for the most part Dimitroff's decisions have been very astute. I believe what is at work here is as Louis Pasteur observed: "Chance favors the prepared mind." Despite what some people say, in the long term it really is better to be Good than Lucky – for if you are good you'll also tend to be "lucky."Link: http://blogs.ajc.com/jeff-schultz-blog/2010/11/11/falcons-announce-their-arrival-with-win-over-ravens/

DD: Objective Elite
I had forgotten about that coin toss. Good observation. It sure seems Ryan was meant to be a Falcon.Yep, the football gods had to right the wrongs that happened to us. I'm not saying Ryan's a HoFer or anything like that, he's certainly head and shoulders above where I thought he would be. In all seriousness, barring injury of something crazy happening, he'll end up breaking alot of Falcons records, most importantly the WINS record. Karst41
What caught me off guard, (pun intended) was the commentators comments about Flacco being Flat Footed in the Pocket.Point being, had not we won the toss, we would have wound up with a Strong Armed and Flat Footed QB.BTWWhat are the other QB's from the 2008 draft doing these days besides nothing. If you ask me, the Best QB drafted from 2008 forward has beenMatt Ryan and Sam Bradford. But then again, my op onions have not counted for muchobver the past few weeks. So I will justify my post by saying."Im just saying is all" :P
gritzblitz
He may be lucky but he is a good evaluator of talent as well. Many thought we should have went another route drafting Dorsey & getting a Qb (Brohm) in the 2nd Rd. He was the one that made the decision and didn't waver. I'm glad he has an eye for talent....& that is lucky for us.
JayOzOne
I had forgotten about that coin toss. Good observation. It sure seems Ryan was meant to be a Falcon. To think that there were many of us that thought that Ryan dissed us in an interview and wished him ill will. So I will justify my post by saying."Im just saying is all" :PI can't remember all of the other QBs that board members were hoping we'd pass up Ryan to draft. I don't recall wanting someone else, but I was ticked off when I found out we were going to use the #3 pick on him instead of Dorsey. JayOzOne
Young Tom's beginner's luck will soon run out.Luck always runs out. Don't hold your breath waiting for it, Bubba. The underlying theme for this post is that he's good, not lucky.
