Sacks Allowed per Player Through Week 7

If you look at the leaderboard for most sacks allowed in the NFL this season, there are several names you would expect. Brandon Keith has been over his head as the Cardinals' right tackle, so it's not shocking to see him leading the lead with seven sacks allowed.

San Francisco rookie Anthony Davis was viewed as quite raw when he was drafted, so it's not surprising that he's allowed six sacks. And the Bears have been awful at protecting the quarterback, which explains why Frank Omiyale and J'Marcus Weeb are both in the top 10.

But there are a couple of names that are a little more unexpected. Giants tackle David Diehl, for example, has allowed 6.5 sacks this year after allowing 5.5 sacks all of last year. What's more concerning if you are a Giants fan is how Diehl is giving up the sacks. Last year, Diehl was beaten by a speed rush around the outside only once for a sack. This year he's given up 4.5 sacks on speed rushes. There's a chance that he's just not quick enough anymore to block the NFL's best defensive ends.

Sam Baker's spot near the top of this list is more surprising as he's been a reliable left tackle for the Falcons for several years. He gave up seven sacks all of last year. But his sack numbers haven't been helped by a couple of plays where Matt Ryan held the ball for 4.4 seconds or more, resulting in sacks where Baker's man made the play, but Baker wasn't at fault.

Because we don't know the play call, it is possible that some of these numbers are slightly off, but on most sacks, it is clear who is responsible.

It's all good. Every time I copy and paste I have to do one section at a time. But this hasn't been a good year for him. Maybe he should've been working with Abe in the offseason to get better.

Sometimes I wonder if there are some new blocking schemes being implemented this year. It wasn't only Baker I saw letting an LB go untouched while he blocked down but I've seen Dahl do it as well as if they were expecting someone like the back or TE to pick up the block.

I'm still not giving Baker a pass though because he is getting beat with the speed rush on several occasions and not just by the more prominent DE's. Other than the one play where Ryan nearly got killed Baker looked better last week but I hope he gets things figured out in a hurry.
