Mike Smith and Co take on Offense

Recommended Posts

n 2010, teams have outscored the Falcons 45-14 in the first quarter.

The Falcons have scored first in two of their six games and have led at halftime once. At the half, they have trailed in three games and been tied twice.

“We’ve got to start faster," Smith said.

The Falcons, like most teams in the league, open the game with a script of plays. The slow starts would suggest that teams are predicting correctly how to defend the Falcons.

"They know that we are a power-running football team," White said. "That's why we've got [running back] Michael Turner. That's why we've got to be able to run the ball, run play-action and things like that or people can just sit in Cover Two and cover us all day."

Ryan believes the team has shot itself in the foot too much early in games.

"It's more of what we've done," Ryan said. "The mistakes that we've made early in games, whether it be myself missing a read or not making a play in certain situations. I think the biggest thing is that we need to convert on some of those third downs early in games."

The Falcons have scored on their opening drive one time.

"It is one of the things that needs to get addressed, and it is getting addressed," tight end Tony Gonzalez said. "We have to correct that because it's going to jump up and bite us."

Hate to tell Tony this, but it already jumped up and bit them.

A sustained falcon drive early in the eagles game would have completely changed that game. Would have given the D a chance to catch their breath, and even if the eagles had scored twice, wouldn't have had nearly the impact that scoring 2 TDs in 6 minutes did. 14-7 is way different than 14-0.

Tony G is trying hard not to say anything that would throw a coach under the bus, but don't be surprised if something comes out of his mouth that is the "smoking gun" evidence that MM is a big issue for this offense...

Honest question here, have you heard players praise MM? Cuz I can't...

 never, well there was that game against the bears and they showed a sound byte of matt ryan saying ''great job'' to MM heading to the locker room, but of course that was in 08, so nope... just a lot of '' we need more explosive plays''(roddy white) or '' we need to be more explosive on 1st and 2nd down''(matt ryan)

The little things make a BIG difference. First drive, 3rd and 3. Eagles show their blitz, Harvey Dahl doesn't pick it up and is standing around blocking nobody while Ryan is sacked for a 9 yard loss by a guy that went untouched right up the gut. He should pick up that block, and we would have a great chance at picking up the 3 yards. Instead, we punt, and the Eagles go up 7-0 on two offensive plays.

Yeah and that was the game where Ryan made a ton of 3rd down conversions and we still kicked a lot of field goals. Had it not been for the phenomenal ending that would have stuck out a lot more.

and the heat is back on MM to deal with this situation......

My thoughts exactly. If we've scored on one opening drive, that has to do more with the OC than anyone else.

I do, however, love that Ryan doesn't blame other people and always looks to shoulder the responsibility himself.

I dont like the way the offense is designed. You can't go for 13 play TD scoring drives everytime, its impossible to sustain, and the D will sit on those short routes and pick 'em off, aswell as Tee up on the run. Horrendous play calling, we are so obsessed with this dink and dunk crap its kind of a traversy and a waste of talent.

I am starting to think Mike Murlarkey is too stubborn to make corrections. Here is the biggest tell of how I know MM has changed the whole look of this offense since 08.

We can all agree the 08 offense was a **** good offense. Vikings coaches on the sidelines in 08 even said the Falcons offense is pretty **** good. In 08, the Falcons lead the league in first quarter points. Did they not? How many times in that year did the Falcons jump to an early lead? It was almost every game.

In 09, the trade of Tony Gonzalez happened. The offense changed. It was not about blocking tight ends and high production from the RB and WR positions. It was about making Tony G a part of the offense. MM had his offense looking great in 08 but now he had to change it all up because he had Tony G to provide that "pass catching tight end."

Has this offense looked any good since 08? Honestly? I can't remember one game in the past 2 years where I felt the offense had confidence.

Could it be that MM is play calling an offense that he is not used too? That he is play calling to cater for Tony G? In 08, MM came up with great plays and attacked when necessary. Now, its about Tony G getting his 8 to 10 catches a game.

The o-line looks completely different from 08. Maybe the offense changed them too. The o-line from 08 had Hartsock and Peele, who are incredible blockers. The running game was top of the league, the sacks rarely came. Why did it all change? Did the Tony G trade really effect this offense? My answer, yes it did. The numbers, the performance and the confidence or lack there of, is not lying to us. 08 offense is far more superior than what the 09 and 10 offense has shown. Far more superior. That was everyone's first year together too which makes it even more puzzling.

Tony G changed this offense with him in it. Would any one really be upset if the Falcons played the way they played in 08 offensively? Some one please tell me if they would.

We are way to predictable on offense period I keep trying to figure out in Ryans first year we threw the ball downfield we were explosive why are we dinking and dunking we are handcuffing this offense and its going to hurt in the long run MM take the training wheels off and let these guys make plays

It's not just the Eagles game....

Same thing with the Browns... 49ers... Browns....etc.

I think we've only scored before the other team 1 time this season.... the sad thing is that this is the same thing we were seeing in the preseason.
