Bama rarely plays a 'regular defense'.

It also helps to be playing the likes of Tennessee and Vandy ... or ULL for that matter.

I'll be even more convinced that our DEF has turned a corner when we play consistently all four quarters against a respectable OFF.

I remember CTG talking about the same thing earlier in the season where we couldn't play in our 3-4 due to having to be in the nickel for a number of games. We changed us our nickel and our personnel and we are playing much better in it.

i was referring to playing in the nickel instead of being in our base 3-4 defense. we have change our personnel (something ctg talked about) because teams are forcing us and bama to be in a nickel instead of our standard base 3-4. regardless of who we are playing the fact that we have changed up our personnel so we are better in the nickel is a very impt thing considering we are implementing a new system.

Good points. Thanks for posting. I wonder what we'll roll out for GaTech?

As spotty as our DEF has been, I really don't think we can blame our 1-4 start on the DEF. Murray has been the only thing consistent about our OFF and that cost us some games early.

I hope we've hit our stride on both sides of the ball. I really want us to get bowl eligible. For the extra practices ... if nothing else!

With the way offenses are spreading the field out. It is hard to run a base 43 or 34 D now. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of D's start using a 3-3-5 or a 4-2-5 system.

The changes CTG has made to the D has shown an improvement on D.

I'm really anxious to see our D this week against KY, who has a pretty dang good offense.

We've made some strides these last few games, and I think the players are getting more comfortable and reacting better and making plays now, instead of thinking too much. We still have the mental lapses here and there, but I think as a unit we're coming together nicely.

However, I do realize these last 2 games were against really bad teams, UT and Vandy. So, I'm really anxious to see how we perform against a potent Offense.

All in all, I've been very happy with the performance of the D and CTG & Co. (especially Belin) In fact, the D has given us a chance to win every game so far. I put the losses more on the offense than the D (and before the season, I figured it'd be the other way around)

How did we change our personnel?

This.....

I'm surprised it hasn't happened more than it has. A 3-3-5 or a 3-5-3 would add a lot of flexibility in how you rush the passer or drop back to defend the pass. I'd like to see us use something like this against Auburn and bring in Ogletree to shadow Newton.

During the South Carolina game in which we were manhandled, we only gave up 17 points. We gave up 31 to Arkansas which with the 400 passing yards from Mallet isn't great, but you have to take into account that their backup qb threw 4 td passes against Auburn as they put 43 points on the board. We've blown assignments, missed tackles, yet the scheme has shown itself effective. Even with a new scheme, this team is noticeably better.

I agree that the DEF is noticeably better.

I think our worst moments as a DEF -- and as a team -- this season came against Colorado.

Our DEF came apart at a bad time against ARK but I think the DEF had the weight of the entire game on their shoulders for most of the effort. Remember, our offense struggled to even move the ball, had lots of 3-and-outs, etc. We put the D on the field a lot and in some bad positions against ARK.
