How good are we?

Recommended Posts

On one hand we are 4-2. We have played 4 road games (3 of which were against 3 of the best teams in the NFL). One of our loses occurred in OT, on the road, against possibly the best defense in the NFL.

On the other hand, if not for 2 miracles against NO and SF we would be 2-4. To further play devil's advocate, one could make the case that if Seneca Wallace doesn't get hurt and Jake Delhomme doesn't come in the game, we lose at Cleveland.

Here is the way I see it;

There is nowhere near a dominate/best team in the NFC. The Giants, Eagles, Redskins, Bears (?), Packers, Saints, and Falcons all have legitimate chances to win the NFC. They are all equals in my book. Just make the playoffs and get lucky because it's a craps shoot.

p.s. - not really Falcons related, but imo the five best teams in the NFL are in the AFC.

Well, if we win our next three games (all at home) then will we be the best team in the NFC?

No

The following teams are better in the NFC:

Giants, Cowboys,Saints, Redskins, Bucs AND definitely Eagles.

And, yes, I did say Bucs. Watch us lose to them too. Put down the crack pipes Falcons fans. These are still the same old Falcons until PROVEN otherwise!!!!!!

Thank you for your positive contributions to the board. Keep up the good work.

To answer the original poster - the team is solid, not great. The good news is that there isn't a great team in the NFL this year at all, and certainly not in the NFC.

So.....you never know. The tricky part for the Falcons is going to be winning games that will prove a lot more difficult that what the fanbase had originally imagined, specifically road dates at St. Louis and Seattle.

To other posters, I could care less about power rankings, but there is an invisible measure that goes beyond a teams record that dictates how good they really are. This is what I wanted people's opinions on. But I feel most feel the same as me; there is no best team in the NFC, but the Falcons are among the better.

This is where I disagree. I think the Jets, Steelers, Ravens, Patriots and Colts would beat any team in the NFC consistently. Fortunately, we only have to worry about the Ravens.

Well I don't think that means those teams are great, I think it just means the NFC is extremely mediocre.

I'm just saying that I don't see anything remotely resembling a dominant team in the league - every team, even those you mentioned, is squeeking out most of the wins.

I think it's all relative. If the Saints, Bucs, and Panthers all finish 4-12 and the Falcons finish 8-8, then the Falcons are clearly the superior team in the South.

Just because the NFC is mediocre doesn't mean there aren't great teams in the AFC. The Jets (who I hate) have only lost their opener to a very good team and they probably have a top ten offense and defense. The Steelers have been playing with their 2nd and 3rd string QB all year and have only lost once, again to a very good team. Speaking of that very good team, the Ravens have beaten the best 2 teams in the NFL (probably) on the road.

I'm just saying, I'll take those 5 AFC teams I mentioned to beat anyone in the NFC 7 days a week.

If you honestly think the Ravens, Jets, Patriots, Colts, and Steelers are head and shoulders above the rest of the NFL...you're smoking something and I don't want any.

All of the above teams have holes just as teams in the NFC do. It's FAR too early to make claims, especially since no team has dominated like the Saints and Colts did last year. The Colts have defensive and running game issues. The Patriots have defensive issues. The Steelers can be shut down on offense (even with Roethlisburger) as they lack a consistent outside threat. Flacco can be rattled and the secondary has problems for the Ravens. Sanchez can also be rattled into a bad game and you can attack the Jets 3rd corner. You can even attack their #2 corner if you have the talent and scheme.

When the Saints beat the Steelers in two weeks, both you and ESPN will toot a different horn. It's only week 7 kid. Stop listenting to the talking heads who know even less.
