Singletary Out after this Season

Didn't see this and yes it doesn't go in TATF. Mods please move to right forum.

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports was the first to mention that the 49ers had issues with the play-calling of offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye. Not long after Cole’s revealing article came out, the Niners fired Raye.

So maybe it’s worth paying attention when Cole writes this:

If the 49ers should pull off a miracle comeback this season, it probably won’t save coach Mike Singletary’s job. According to a team source, Singletary will need to do some extraordinary things over the final 11 games to have any hope of coming back as coach. That extraordinary thing would be something like winning all of the remaining games and even a playoff contest or two.

While York also said this weekend that he’s “absolutely” staying with Singletary for the remainder of the year, the decision to stand pat is partly based on the belief that there’s no one on staff that the organization feels it can entrust with the job.

When Singletary took over as head coach of San Francisco in the midst of the 2008 season, much was made of his disciplined, take-no-prisoners attitude. People loved it, but there was one problem behind it all: Singletary doesn’t understand the X’s and O’s that go with the game of football. As several coaches have said over the weeks, when a coach doesn’t know the functional part of the game, he walks a dangerous line with players.

Cole says he has talked with plenty of people who have worked with Singletary over the years and that the man has a reputation for not knowing how to fix problems that occur on the field.

Singletary’s animated demeanor gained him instant stardom when he first jumped on the scene as the Niners interim coach in 2008. He went 5-4 that season and was thought to be turning the organization around. But what observers did not think about was that being an interim coach is more about motivation skills than tactical aptitude. An interim coach inherits a system and modus operandi that are already in place; their main job is to help change the mindset in the locker room.

Singletary could change the emotional culture in San Francisco, but as a fulltime head coach he was required to change the entire culture. That’s when whatever strategic limitations he might have would become an issue.

The Atlanta Falcons beat the 49ers, after SF seemingly had the game in hand.

There. That's TATF!

Lesson learned: Keep those britches on, Mike.............^_^

It makes perfect sense. Listen to singletary after each loss, it's a highlight reel of emotional we got beat, they whooped our tails, i can't play with him, etc...

Listen to coach smith. It was a misfit, we didn't play our assignement, we weren't gap sound, etc...

Singletary is all emotion on and off the field. Smitty is a strategist. He knows when to be emotional to rally the troops, and when to be strategic and TEACH.

I agree, he is a coordinator or an assistant, but you're right he is too emotional to be the head man
