Nose tackle Justin Anderson will have season-ending toe surgery, head coach Mark Richt said after Wednesdays practice.

Anderson, a junior, missed the past two games with turf toe, and Richt said the decision was made to get the surgery now so he could be ready for his final year. Anderson has already taken a redshirt year, so he would not be eligible for a sixth season.

The decision also hurts the team depth-wise at the position. DeAngelo Tyson has been starting there, and Kwame Geathers got some snaps against Arkansas. Brandon Wood and Abry Jones have also shifted inside in certain packages.

The nose position, we still feel like were still good with DeAngelo and Kwame, Richt said. And other people can jump in there.

Really bummed with the news. I was excited to see him get in there, think he would have been a monster in there. He just can't seem to catch a break. Man, does the light ever need to go on for Kwame! C'mon big man, we need you!

In other news, at least it looks like we'll be getting Branden Smith back...

Really bummed with the news. I was excited to see him get in there, think he would have been a monster in there. He just can't seem to catch a break. Man, does the light ever need to go on for Kwame! C'mon big man, we need you!

In other news, at least it looks like we'll be getting Branden Smith back...

I wonder why this kid couldn't qualify for a medical redshirt? we have at least 1, but I believe we have 2 who were given a sixth year of eligibility due to medical issues.

If we're going to run a 3-4 then the NT is the single most important player on the team. We have to recruit a quality fatboy to take on the double teams. Don't believe me? Go ask Ray Lewis why the Ravens have Ngata on their team now. Think Mount Cody.

if your first redshirt season was not medical related you can't get a 6th year of eligibility. a number of times you will see a freshman play a few games until right under the minimum and then all of a sudden get an injury (especially kids who you thought were going to be redshirted in the first place) so that they can get that 6th year if needed.

Well I have heard all of the funny stories about players mysteriously coming down with season ending injuries during their freshman seasons and thus having to take a red shirt after a few games into the season. I think we redshirted Smelley a few years ago due to a severe ankle injury. The next year one of the Gamecock sports reporters was asking him about the injury and Smelley couldn't even remember which ankle was supposedly hurt.

yep.. now not all freshman injuries are like that. i know tavarres king played 3 games and he injured his ankle real bad and had surgery on it, but you will see some guys get those "mysterious" injuries after playing a few games and get that medical redshirt.
