Rumour – Cowboys on the verge of firing Wade Phillips

UPDATE – 2pm EST – Jon Gruden has a clause in his MNF contract that won’t allow him to leave his analyst position to take the Cowboys HC position if Phillips was fired. As well, Tony Dungee has gone on record as saying he won’t coach this year.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who follows the NFL that Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips is on a short leash. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has gone on the record saying that the 0-2 start is “quite a setback” for the organization.

Word now comes from two great sources close to the organization that Jones is gauging interest from a few former NFL head coaches currently working on TV networks. CBS in-studio analyst Bill Cowher is Jones number one choice to replace Phillips. His second choice is NFL Network/Fox analyst Brian Billick. Both Cowher and Billick have Super Bowl rings, something Jones really wants to have when it comes to who will be leading his struggling team.

Many feel the players have tuned out Phillips and last Friday was a clear example of how this situation continues to snowball. Phillips got into details on Monday about Friday’s practice. “Do I think it could be better? Sure,” Phillips said. “Do I think we had a bad practice Friday? Yes, we told them that in the meeting. We went back over it and said, ‘Hey, we didn’t practice well enough.’” How does the same thing occur that has happened over the past two years under Phillips watch? Enough is enough and now is the time for Jones to pull the plug on him. It’s plain to see that the team has no identity and have tuned out Phillips.

I am told that if the Cowboys lose to the Houston Texans on Sunday that Jones won’t hesitate in firing Phillips. Two other possible candidates that have surfaced are Marty Schottenheimer and Steve Mariucci. Schottenheimer who last patrolled the sidelines for San Diego back in 2006-07, was fired by the Chargers in February of 2007. His 5-13 playoff record is definitely not appealing. While Mariucci has a 3-4 playoff record, he hasn’t coached since the 2005 season after a three year stint in Detroit.

Regardless, of what happens in Houston this Sunday, Jones needs to fire Phillips if he hopes to have his team in the playoffs come January. I for one truly believe one of the 4 names I have mentioned will be wearing that Star on their hat come early next week.

More to come as the week unfolds. I can be contacted at kevinlee@prosportsblogging.com anytime.

I don't believe it. Jerry can make some bold moves but a new HC after the season has started trying to come in and change everything that has happened the last 3 or so years? What are the odds that's going to work out this season? You let Wade finish and if you're not happy then you make a change.

Ask the Chargers how firing a playoff caliber coach has turned out for them. Yeah, they won a couple of playoff games but all of their best players are either hurt, gone, or unsigned and yeah they might make the playoffs again but they have no chance of getting to the Super Bowl. Firing Wade would be a huge mistake for that franchise, so please Jerry Jones do your Al Davis "magic"...lol

garrett should be on the hot seat. wade phillips is a 3-4 defensive guy, not an offensive coach. if phillips goes and garrett stays expect more of the same. how do you not have a running game with choice barber and jones??? lets get real.

Agreed! What's worse is Garrett wasn't Wade's decision...he was Jerry's.

How can anyone defend Wade? It is not a DC or OC fault that their players are ******* up every other play, that comes down to respect and discipline.

It seems that whenever the Cowboys make a play, someone screws it up.

The problem hasn't been playcalling on either side of the ball. The problem has been the players concentration and focus. That is a DIRECT cause of a poor Head Coach.

I'd like to find the thread where I called Wade a poor excuse for a head coach before the season started...

It's not Dallas defense fault they're losing games, it's the offense fault. To much passing and too many turnovers. Wade has nothing to do with the offense.

Really?

Watch that Dallas defense again, they highlighted it during 'Playbook' on NFL Network. The players on the defense continuously make mental mistakes, don't know who is supposed to blitz/not blitz, and don't know who to cover. There is a reason the players are saying they are looking like clowns.

The D is notorious for letting the other team score after Dallas scores.I remember that Ravens game where they gave up Back to back 80+ yard TD runs, both after Dallas scores.

but the coaching is terrible. I like Wade as a D coach, but not head. I do not want Garret, nor any of the ones mentioned. I have no clue who needs the job. But Cowboys win Sunday and it will blow over. 2 games into a season is no time to fire a HC. No one is above 500 in the NFCE.

Did you watch the Redskins game? That was like the 3rd game in a row they held them w/o a TD and the Cowboys still lost. How many turnovers did the Dallas offense have against Chicago last week? Wade not the problem.

Wade not the problem? He IS the problem.

You seem to focus on Wade as being the guy who runs the defense. You have TWO defensive players who say they are playing like clowns because they have no clue what they're doing, but Wade is not the problem?

Head Coaches are there for a reason, if Wade's only concern was for Defense then he wouldn't be a head coach would he?
