The Arizona Diamondbacks have hired Kevin Towers as their new general manager and are expected to introduce him at a news conference as early as Wednesday, a team source told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

Towers will receive a two-year contract, the source said.

Towers was GM of the San Diego Padres for 14 seasons before his October 2009 firing. After Towers took over as GM, the Padres won four NL West titles and made it to the 1998 World Series, where they were swept by the New York Yankees.

Interim Diamondbacks GM Jerry Dipoto was the other finalist for the job. Dipoto filled the role in Arizona after Josh Byrnes was fired in June.

Towers has been a special assistant for the Yankees this season while he continued to collect a salary from the Padres.

The Diamondbacks are in last place in the NL West. Only the Pittsburgh Pirates (52-98) have a worse record in the NL than Arizona (60-91)
