I am MORE convinced we are a playoff caliber team

Ok. It is too early for that to be any more than "slightly more convinced" but it is still more.

Why?

I have been paying attention. I don't care how well Ryan plays the chances of us getting deep in the playoffs with a weak defense are slim to none. Elite qbs fail year after year.

Our offense lost the game for us this week. That is something we don't get to say very often. It doesn't make the loss any more acceptable but usually our offense carries the team and that is COMPLETELY backward if we want to see a sb anytime soon. It is easier to stop the ball from being moved than it is to move it. Year after year we have failed at the easier of the two tasks.

Now there are still some problems on defense but I don't count giving up the big play as one of them. Every defense makes mistakes and gives up big plays. I am far from sold on our secondary.

I am ready to join the others and say we need another WR and our Oline needs to get the memo to rise up but I am more focused on how our defense will look over the next couple of weeks.

So you can keep belly-aching about Ryan and the offense but if we end up in the bottom 10 on defense again this year it is doubtful even Manning could get us to a sb.

It is ALL about defense.

I'm pretty sure the Saints and Brees just won the SB with the 21st ranked D in the league, though.

True. I didn't say it was impossible but you have to have a qb with much more experience and even that is not a lock. Look at how many times Manning has failed to go the distance. Unless someone can perform magic I don't see how Ryan can play at a Manning/Brees/Warner level this soon in his career. However, if you look at the recent qbs that got their young they had great defenses.

It is all about defense.

The defense played well Sunday and they should get immediately better. When you add Babineaux, and get Spoon and Robinson comfortable, the defense could be great this year.

And I can't believe that more fans are not excited about it. This is huge for this franchise. In the last 30 years we have been a top 10 defense something like 5 times. One of those years was 1998.

Truth is that I didn't see anything in that game that swayed me too far in either direction. It seemed like another preseason game where you just aren't sure what to expect. That's because we were so close and even had the lead at times. When it was all done, total yardage was the same minus Mendenhall's 50 yd blast and 10 yds. We did see several signs that the defense was playing better in the preseason and we saw the offense be sluggish too. We know that an offense will normally take longer to come together than a defense will.

A lot of people completely dismissed Dixon, who I said could test our secondary and he did with two of the longest plays from scrimmage from either qb. What I saw was enough to raise concern, but not any real alarms defensively, a bit of a slow start against the run at times. We kept their offense in check too but I wasn't expecting a Manning type of passing game either. In 2008, it wasn't just the offense that carried us into the playoffs, we relied on a bend but don't break defense which was hit hard by injury in 09 but managed to make great improvements against the run. I don't yet see the kind of defense that we can ride into the playoffs, but it doesn't look at the moment that the defense is going to be a liablity.

A good defense helped get the Jets into the playoffs last year, but then their offense... laugh.gif My guess is that we'll end up with a better year offensively than the Jets but not as good on the D.

25th - we were 21st.

They were a 25th ranked - overly aggressive - extremely opportunistic defense who ranked 3rd in the league in interceptions, 5th in recovered fumbles and 1st in defensive touchdowns.

I am too bud. Defense look good and aggresive. Matt played a really good game I thoght with what he had to work with. He hardly had any time in the pocket and no run support.

The D's won't be that good every week. So we should be able to get our run game going and hold the pocket longer.

Would be nice to get another receiving threat though. All I want for X-mas is VJ!!! Please TD Please

If we look at the game again, Hines Ward beat us on offense for Pittsburgh. He did noting spectacular. He just never stopped. This could have been due to the crowd noise. Our defense played lights out, but they didn't play til the whistle. Every catch Ward made, he had to come back or was an extended route. Mendenhall had 122 yards rushing, with 50 coming on the game winning TD. Other than that, he had 71 on like 20 something carries? Roughly around 3.3 ypc? Our defense was awesome, and our offense moved to ball pretty good on one of the best defense in the NFL. The one negative: We lost.

We really won't know what we got on D until week 3, when we face our first elite QB ........ I can't help but think we got to be better than last year on D, but I am really, really, starting to hate BVG's scheme ......

because ESPN's new statement of the year is, "it's an offensive game now". if we can stay in the middle of the pack on offense and top 10 in defense, the playoffs is a toss up. even Jake Dellhomme could turn it on and put up big numbers in the playoffs, barring his Cardinal meltdown. i'm with you on this, although, i've always liked the mantra, defense puts you in position, offense wins the games, special teams can only lose it ^_^

The next few weeks will tell us quite a bit on where we are defensively and I hope this wasn't a fluke. I am not exactly sure where we would have been last year if we hadn't suffered so many injuries.
