Film of a qb Ryan needs to watch to go the next level

Ok. I can't say his name. But you can guess.

IMO, what Ryan is missing is swagger. I thought I saw it starting to happen early last year but with all the setbacks it retreated.

It is refreshing to have a qb that is humble off the field but Ryan needs to learn how to be like a certain other qb a little more on the field. He needs to feel like he is one of the best qbs to ever play the game.

He needs to stop living in his head so much. A certain other qb never lived in his head so he doesn't need to go to that extreme but it is time to find some balance.

Stop worrying about the defense. A certain other qb just assumed he could win the game regardless of what the defense did. I feel like this has been the cause of some conservative playing. If you are worried that you won't see the ball again for 7+ minutes or that you will far further behind it may lead to less risk taking. This is not a game where you can manage risks and expect to win every week.

A certain other qb never felt like he had to earn his job. Ryan needs to take the next step as a leader and demand the same excellence from the rest of his offense he demands of himself. He doesn't have to earn anything anymore.

So, imo, Ryan needs to take a few queues from a certain other qb, I am sure the film room has plenty of footage.

Hopefully your talking about him watching tape of himself playing his rookie season. Or the Jets last year, or the Giants, or the 49ers last year etc.

Just guessing, cause as a Falcons fan, I can't think of any thing I would want Matt Ryan to take away from Michael Vick, other than physical abilities.

I think most of what you can learn from vick is a cautionary tale but I don't think having the polar opposite of vick is the answer either. I wouldn't mind Ryan incorporating some of that swagger into his game.

Vick might be the most physically gifted QB in the history of the sport which does you no good at all when your as dumb as a doorknob.

Michael Vick needs to watch film of Matt Ryan.

Swagger? Was it swagger when he walked into that clinic as Ron Mexico?

Was it swagger when he bold face lied to the man who made him a multimillionaire?

Was it swagger when he was the last one in and the first one out the door?

Was it swagger when he sent this entire franchise down in flames for brutalizing dogs?

We need Ryan to be more like Vick like we need Smitty to be more like Petrino and Arthur to be more like Al Davis.

No thanks.

Yes but I'd say these are all off the feild things. I think what the OP means is that he's like to see Matt take more chances on the feild and act confident (or swagger I guess). Whatever you can say about Vick's play he was definatly a risk/reward kind of guy.

The reality is I don't know if Matt truly feels that way. I know what answers he gives the media but I understand that guys are often focused (especially with our franchise and what we went through before) with media and public perception. I don't like the offense but regardless of what he says in interviews, I think Matt is plenty confident in HIS abilities. I think MOST of the starting QBs in the league that are worth a D are...regardless of the politically correct answers they may give in interviews.

Maybe you're right, and he lacks "it", but I wouldn't be surprised if that's just what he says/does to not be perceived as an *ss/*********. A lot of guys do that.

Anyone remeber back before the draft when every analysis and his brother said that the "it" factor was Ryan's greatest strength.

I'm looking for that Ryan who almost single handily took down Virgina Tech not the Ryan who stares down his recivers and doesn't make the big throws.

So you are saying there are absolutely no positives amongst all the negatives? Not even a couple?

Ok.

Which honestly brings me back to the offense and Mularkey holding him back. After the first season I remember thinking one of his "problems" was he was prone to go for the big play and he'd work on it. Somewhere down the line I feel like Mularkey convinced himself to take that option away altogether or tell Matt to look for it much less. I don't get the impression that Matt is gonna take the offensive issues to the public and I think that's the smart move, but I do get the impression from some of Roddy's comments and Tony G in preseason that guys might be a tad frustrated with the offense.

Or even the "it" from 2008. I still think it is coming, and hopefully soon.

No. Vick had some positives. He had the city of Atlanta mesmerized. He was as exciting to watch as any player EVER in the NFL. I was a huge fan while he was in a Falcons' uni.

Vick's physical skills have never been matched in the NFL. Which quite honestly is sad. If he had of applied himself to the game 1/10th as much as Ryan already has he could quite possibly be the best ever.

....but Matt Ryan is a better QB now than Vick EVER was. He is a student of the game and leads by example. He studies the game and is willing to play hurt. He is a true leader of this team.

The SWAGGER Ryan has is confidence in his teammates and coaching staff and not the fact that he has 4.2 speed.

So, IMO, unless you can give Ryan Vick's 4.2 speed there isn't an intangible worth swapping.

Ya know, to be very honest, vick never crossed my mind during your post dude. I kept thinking Manning. Vick is some other teams backup now isn't he? Its nice we are free of all that distraction that he is known for and it feels good we have moved past all that. So thanks for the reminder that we already took the garbage out. The garbage truck came too, so now, all we have left is an occassional smell from the sour liquid that dripped in our driveway which begins to flare up when the summer sun beats down on it like this f'd up post. rolleyes.gif
