root down
This is a strong case of Deja vu for me. Ark. had the same "fundamentals" and "tackling" issues in yr 1 of our new DC + played alot of young guys. year 2 showed improvement; especially the last 5 games. year 3 is looking MUCH better as far as the fundamentals go. The young guys have grown up and don't have to "think" about where to be or getting to the ball. They just get there, fast, with bad intentions AND they make the tackle.< the same players that previously "couldn't tackle"DC Willy Robinson; has said he at first tried to install too much. After all it was a new D philosophy, terms, responsibilities. AND (this is important) since his experience was in the NFL, sound familiar, he had all sorts of more complex schemes and coverages and blitzs....but it was just too much to ask of the players, at that time.Well, what does that have to do with Tackling? IMO when a player is still thinking about what to do, and hoping not to foul up; he has alot on his mind and when he gets to the ball, he is happy he got there and maybe isn't thinking about form and laying the wood. But once a player arrives at the ball without thinking, his body just gets there, he has alot more "time" and brain power to "think" of one thing and one thing only, TACKLING. Thus the phrase "the game slowed down"Now, you guys not only have a new DC (who is used to complex NFL schemes), but have switched to a 3-4. That is ALOT to absorb. The good news is, it is not the quality of Football players or the DC ability to blame. The bad news is, the remedy is TIME.
Mr Pickle1
Your post doesn't help. I really appreciate it, and to some extent, I agree with it...but this is UGA, not Arkansas. We're not going to put up with 2 more seasons of f'ing around on D. CMR will be gone before it can get better, if what you say is true. slamee101
I'm not too worried yet. I think that most of us were hopeful that Grantham would come in and everything would be fixed overnight but that's just not the case. I think this D will be just fine in time. Also, sometimes you just run into a good player that has a good game. It irks me that guys were in position to wrap up and didn't but give credit to Lattimore...the kid appears to be the real deal. When Knowshon was breaking tackles on people years ago Georgia fans looked at it just him being a special back. He was. As much as we got torched I expect us to get better and we only gave up 2 TDs. In addition, Justin looks like he's going to thrive in this D and I can't wait for us to get after Ryan Mallett next week...
ohiodawg8
You make a good point about thinking too much. I guess that should be expected while still learning the new system. I can't figure out the D only wants to arm tackle or try for the knockout blow, but whatever. Thinking too much or not, make the (add expletive) tackle. CTG had them in good positions to make plays. IMO it all comes down to effort, which was seriously lacking for too much of the game. CTG is going to tear up that film room and practice field this week! Dog River
It's also gonna take time to get the personnel needed to play good run d in the 3-4...a huge NT and bigger ILB's.
