Mularkey...I hope you were watching last night...

Fake screen handoff.

The Vikes used this play often and got a lot of positive yards on the Aints' defense. We run the draw, but this play froze the defense for a couple seconds and gave AP a lot of space. Ryan sells the fake really good. Just plug Norwood in and watch the magic happen. Gonzalez, Douglas, and Norwood should have big days against the Aints' defense. Mularkey just has to utilize them effectively.

Yea, Williams aggressive blitzing schemes leave the middle of the field wide open. I'm sure the Aints will be in more zone blitz schemes to try to keep Gonzalez contained, which will result in more opportunities for Turner and Norwood to tear it up the middle. Douglas will get in the action since he's difficult to cover in the slot. On top of that, you have a cerebral QB in Ryan who can pinpoint the blitz and audible before the defense can adjust. Oh, did I mention he also would have the option of running the no huddle to keep the defense in their base formation?

Good point.

Of course, for a screen fake to work, we have to show the willingess and ability to use the screen play...

Refer to the last sentence in my first post. B)

Our success is riding on how well the secondary performs this year and Mularkey's utilization of our talent. Then again, I don't think the Vikings ran one single screen last night.

I agree. Matt is very adept at doing play-action and the smoke/wr screen fakes on the delayed draw to AP was a solid play...you get that defense thinking too much and they make mistakes.

Ding Ding Ding Ding.

The Falcons ran a few in the preseason, which was encouraging, but they didn't have the timing down too well. Not suprising since the screen is apparently a completely new concept to this offense.

I agree. Pat Y. in his NFC South Blog talked about how the Vikings TE was open all night. That should bode well for Tony Gonzalez.

He wasn't open in the second half at all.

Shiancoe burned them deep on that one blitz, but that TD he made was just a terrific pass and catch. The defense really couldn't have played it much better than they did.

In the same regard, BVG best be payin' attention too. Brees created a whole lot of confusion with his head motion too.

And Paul Boudreau best have paid attention too, those LB's were coming across through the line all night because of their misdirection. Lining up and after the ball is snapped angling through the lineman who was tied up with a defender to harass Favre all night. I'm surprised there were no leg whip penalties.

Must understand though, that Brees tore up the secondary because the Vikes only had Safeties providing coverage on the WR's last night. The corners primarily stayed home to prevent the screens from working because they couldn't cover worth a ****. B)

And it nearly cost Favre quite a few times because he had to turn his back on the defense. Several times he was nearly sacked because of it.

They will pay much more attention to Tony than they did Shiancoe

That's the design of the play.

With any run play, the QB's back is to the defense. As for how the Aints will defend Gonzalez, it'll only open up more opportunities for Douglas and Norwood. We have the playmakers on offense to spread the field and keep their defense from blitzing Ryan all day. The Vikes' problem was that they were thin at WR and RB.

I don't like the idea of our QB turning his back on the D. He has done it with tricky plays before but to design it and have him sacked + fumble and possibly even hurt.

I'd much rather him start pump faking a lot more to open things up immediately instead of gimmick plays.
