The Falcons' doubters may be wrong

Recommended Posts

There are more than a few posters on this board who are going through no small efforts to point out the various shortcomings of this season's Falcons. Doubters who maintain that the Falcons stand little chance of winning this season's Super Bowl.

Likely, the apostates are right, but what of it? One might ask them if not the Falcons then which NFL team would they be willing to bet their next year's income on to win the 2010 NFC Championship? If you took every NFL Team individually and went on record saying that team will not win the upcoming Super Bowl, you'll be correct 97% of the time.

Too many people equate pessimism and cynicism with wisdom, but it's really not. Yes, the Falcons have room for improvement in areas . . . but I've yet to read a pre-season in-depth analysis of any other NFL team, in any season, where the article didn't list a number of weak points in the lineup. No team is invincible – the fact that no NFL team has managed to achieve an undefeated season in almost 40 years should be proof of that statement.

Lord knows the Atlanta Falcons have disappointed me almost too many times to remember. They may yet do it again, but I truly believe this 2010 Falcons team may overall be the strongest this franchise has ever fielded; the prospect is tantalizing.

Overly optimistic? Perhaps, but if the Falcons do falter this season I'll live through it. At least I'm feeling good at the moment; the pessimists have chosen to receive their misery in extended installments. When it comes to sports, I believe the following quote has it right:

“For myself I am an optimist - it does not seem to be much use being anything else.”

Winston Churchill

I was an extreme optomist last year, and I'd like to be this year. It's just hard for me to see. My profession is that I am an analyst, and the analyst in me doesn't see it.

Doesn't mean it's not going to happen though. Nobody will be happier if I am wrong.

If I were going to lay money on a team in the NFC, it would be the Packers. Just seems like Aaron Rodgers time might be coming fast.

If I had to, better yet, if there were a world where I would EVER be rich enough to bet "next year's salary".... (and btw, I want to go live there if someone could kindly tell me where it is, thx)....

then I would probably go w/GB or the Pats.

However, I LOVE your optimism, and you're correct in saying "Why NOT us?" Another week, and all 32 teams are = again. B)

I agree with the OP, especially the Winston Churchill quote. I see no reason to not be optimistic. It doesn't change the direction of the team if I'm not optimistic, so why not put myself on cloud 9 about the team while I can and hopefully they will keep me there.

Packers or Saints. Sorry, but if anyone has seen the Saints this pre-season their Offense has been blowing it up.

Right now I rank the Packers and Saints the top 2 NFC teams.

Yeah I think the notion that the Saints might drift back to 8-8 is some serious wishful thinking. Only if Brees goes down.

optimist, pessimist, doubter, analyst, realist, humorist

what difference does it make, your outlook will not effect the team's play.

Just pull for the Falcons to win each time they play,

heck why not pull for each play to succeed.

Offense isn't everything, Greenbay has a great offense, but their defense is weak, their running game is not strong, and their O-line was a problem last year. I really like our chances this year. We have addressed alot of our weaknesses. I think Matt plays better this year. I wouldn't put to much in the preseason as most do. you can judge individual talent in the preseason, but that about it. Example, this DB can't cover one on one, this olineman gets beats one on one, but game planning and scheming is not done.

We matched up with the Saints last year with a weak Secondary. The Saints have not changed, but Atlanta has changed. Greenbay has not changed either.

Only question mark we still have as a team, is pass rush, but I looks like we will be blitz more this year to help that. I agree with Falcon Freddie, this is the most talented Falcons team, I have seen. And we are young, we have done it in the past with Old Vets at the end of their careers.

Please. Dallas beat New Orleans 24-17 in a game that ended on a sack/fumble by Brees as the Saints were marching down field to tie the game. If that's beating "the tar out of" someone, what would you call a 35-27 game that was never in doubt? Two healthy squads....Dallas would win maybe 4 out of 10....maybe.

Great Post and well said.

I too have the Packers, Cowboys, and Saints as the top 3 right now in no particular order. However, I have to note that Dallas has barely scored in the preseason. Why do I have them ranked so high? Got me.

More than likely by week 4 there will be some real surprises.

Every team that succeeds in today's NFL has to do it right and have some breaks go their way. The Falcons are doing it right, now we have to play the games.

I have more reason for optimism this year than ever before. We have Samuel L. Jackson on our side. The Saints used all their MOJO and voodoo last year. Brett could breakdown at any time. The Cowboys are a loss or two away from implosion at the best of times. We only play Green Bay once in the regular season. Despite the hype surrounding various clubs, there are no teams in this league right now more physical than the Falcons.

Seriously...If you have been following this team very long then you should know.

Their offense doesn't play defense, and Sharper is going to probably start on the PUP. He was a major contributor to the Super Bowl team last season. And again here's a preseason equation 4-0 preseason = 0-16 regular season for one unnamed team.

Preseason is a rehearsal, not the real show.
