Atlanta Falcons Defensive end Lawrence Sidbury is making progress

10:00 am August 25, 2010, by D. Orlando Ledbetter

FLOWERY BRANCH — Defensive end Lawrence Sidbury turned in a strong performance against New England and may be ready to see more action against first and second string players.

He finished with four tackles and one sack.

“I can explain it in one word, progress,” Sidbury said. “In this camp I feel myself getting better. I feel my teammates around me getting better as a unit.”

Sidbury, a fourth round pick in 2009, played sparingly as a rookie, but showed flashes of the destructive and explosive player he was at Richmond. While he dominated for the Spiders, he’s had to work on his techniques and skills to get past NFL linemen.

The sack was particularly gratifying for Sidbury.

“That is one of the things the coach (Ray) Hamilton harps on, improving our pass rush from last year,” Sidbury said. “I was just doing the things that we’ve been working on in practice, trying some new stuff.”

If the Falcons can’t get the sack, they at least want to make the quarterback move and get out of his comfort zone.

If Sidbury keeps showing that he can get to the quarterback, he knows there is playing time to be earned in the defensive line rotation approach the Falcons use.

“The coaches try to keep us fresh,” Sidbury said. “He will have us on the field at any given time.”

Defensive John Abraham invited Sidbury to workout with him at Bommarito Performance Systems in south Florida this summer.

“He’s been doing this for a long time,” Sidbury said. “You’ve heard stories about things (not) working out. . . so I respect him for reaching out to me to help me out. That says a lot about him.”

This is great news for our pass rush!

Not only is it good news for Sidburys season, but the more he can get on the field the less

we have to rely on Abe. Keeping Abe fresh for the long haul is key for our pass rush, most

notably if we're looking at post-season play.

With Bierman progressing nicely and our interior line showing improvement, i predict

by week 6 our defensive front is going to be winning games for us.

Yes ... people were a little concerned we did not make a move at DE this offseason.

Based on what we are seeing ... it looks like the BIERBURY will be more than enough to bookend with ABE.

I'm extremley impressed with the way Sidburys looking. Physically he is much bigger than this time last year. I've seen him look great with some bull rushes collapsing the pocket this preaseson with his added strength. Also looks very quick off the line at the snap. To me he looks built like Peppers with a spin move that rivals Freeneys. I'm looking foward to watch him and Kroy on the field at the same time rushing the passer!!!

I'm actually stoked on just about everyone on the D-line, I think we are going to have a D-line that penetrates and disrupts like we haven't seen in atlanta maybe ever!!! Who seeing what I'm seeing

its good to have 2 young guys that are flashing some skills out there in pass rushing...

its too bad Chauncey never panned out to his potential...I dont think he breaks camp with us next season

Trey Lewis's stock is rising as well ... and once and for all I think JA98 finally makes an IMPACT.

Biermann is more than flashing at this point.

He has been the most impactful player in pre-season this year ... and our second best lineman last year.

I wonder when Sidbury is going to incorporate that spin move that worked so well for him in college? I remember on a few pass rushes vs the Pats that if he had spun back to the inside he would have had at least two sacks easily.

El Sid has the speed for a good outside rush in order to make the OT respect his game, but as soon as he gets them backpedaling wide, he should do that spin move and kill the QB.

Agreed! Sid also has really long arms which is obviously a great trait for a pass rusher. I'm thinking he may just be working on some new pass rush moves, but once the season starts I beileve Spinbury will be straight terrorizing like the tazmanian devil!!!!
