Who gets red-shirted at UGA?

I think that most of us have heard that Alec Ogletree & Derek Owens are near locks to get playing time this year. I would also assume that more freshmen (and consequently, fewer walk-ons) will be utilized on special teams now that Fabris is gone. CMR has also stated that he was moving towards using less red-shirts in general, w/ the exception of offensive linemen.

I was wondering if some of you guys who are more plugged-in to less media-filtered practice reports, like Sac, have been getting any other indications on who will/won't be getting red-shirted.

I'm particularly interested in the OLBs, as I suspect that Houston will be picked in the top half of next year's NFL draft. I love Stripling's potential, I just wish he had drank a few more protein shakes in high school. But I would guess that Stripling could still be used on kickoff and punt coverage.

Also, I haven't heard any rumblings since spring about Samuel taking a RS this year, but I don't believe he's been able to practice much this summer.

No inside info here but here are my guesses to who I think will NOT redshirt next year.

Derek Owens

Alec Ogletree

Alexander Ogletree

Jakar Hamilton

Hutson Mason

Michael Bennett (depending on if our WR's can stay healthy or not)

Michael Thornton

Garrison Smith

I hope we don't have to see Mason play but then it may be good to go ahead get him some playing time in the first game.

Yeah, I didn't mean to just limit responses to "insiders." I invite any & all comments.

I'm in agreement w/ at least 3/4 of your guesses, but we're gonna have to play some frosh OLB at least a little, if only for 2011's sake.

Assuming we're up big in the second 1/2 on Sept. 4, do we a. leave Murray in, b. put Gray in at QB, or c. put Mason in. Personally, I can't decide between b & c. I guess it would depend on how strong Gray's preference is to exclusively play WR.

Mason will play this year. No doubt about it. And out of LB, I can't see Stripling playing and I read there was a good chance that Baker would redshirt...I guess Morant and/or Burrows are the most physically ready to play..

Stripling isn't where he needs to be physically & Morant isn't where he needs to be mentally.

If I had to guess, these are the guys that I definitely see playing:

Hutson Mason

Ogletrees (both of 'em)

Jakar Hamilton

Derek Owens

These are the guys I'm on the fence with, and it probably depends on injuries/depth ahead of them and how they progress:

Michael Thornton

Brandon Burrows

Michael Bennett

we will have a few more guys not redshirt. We have no OLB depth so we will see a few guys at olb play as true frosh who wouldn't most years. Brandon Burrows will play as will stripling. I think the guys who definately will not play are benedict, baker, gates, morant, and houston.

"On Thursday, Georgia coach Mark Richt mentioned by name just three freshmen who are most likely to play this season - safety Alec Ogletree, fullback Alexander Ogletree and cornerback Derek Owens. Richt added that others could play."

"Richt anticipates that once the season starts, at least five freshmen will play, which could include some linemen."
