Review of Kansas City @ Atlanta

Normally do this only for Season Games, but wanted to do this for our men and women overseas who can't watch the game:

WR Michael Jenkins, CB Dunta Robinson, S William Moore, S Matt Giordano, DB Brian Williams, RB Jerious Norwood, TE Colin Peek, LB Coy Wire, LB Mike Peterson, WR Harry Douglas, and DT Peria Jerry did not play.

Offense:

QB: Ryan did not really through a whole bunch of passes, and the OL didn't really give him a lot of time to through (more on that later). Redmond, not bad, servicable back up. John Parker Wilson, performed the best out of the 3 QB's. This is NOT saying he should start, just made more play against the 2nd and 3rd string KC Defense.

RB: Turner was strong, very strong. Fast to the hole, power on impact, and drove piles 2-4 yards after contact. Snelling did well, but the guy who caught my eye was Nance. Kid is strong, quick and has good vision. Norwood did not play. Ovie is a BEAST lead blocker. He took a DT and stoned him. We are luck to have him.

WR: Roddy dropped two balls that hit him in the hands, clearly a lack of focus. Meirer made some plays, nothing spectacular.

TE: Gonzo was solid, but number 81, Palmer, he played fairly well. Not much action from the TE, we ran the ball a lot.

OL: We have some work to do hear, and there is a clear drop off in the first string to the second string. The 1st string OL never really gave Ryan or Redmond time to throw, never really a clean pocket. On one play, Ryan got his left knee hit because Baker let his man through. That is not a good sign. Dahl, man this guy just is nasty. I will say they run blocked really well, and on several ocasions, McClure and Blaylock were at the second level on their blocks.

Defense:

DL: Believe this or not, Jamal Anderson was the fastest off the ball, especially on the inside. He had a very good game, best I've seen him play. I think the light has come on (I know a little late), but he was balling out there. He also had an attitude, which I was glad to see. Beerman (I know not spelled right), was getting off the ball and played well and caused a TO. They guy on the DL who really caught my eye was Sidburry. I don't know what he did in the offseason, but it looks like his legs are bigger and upper body bigger. He was came off the ball and his first two steps are so fast. Incredible burst. Keep in mind Jerry did not play. Strength of the Defense is our DL righ now.

LB: Weatherspoon was a non factor, didn't really see him do anything special. Lofton, is a STUD!!!! When he hits head on, he litterally stops all forward momentum from the RB. Nicholas made a couple of good plays and I think he starts. Perterson did not play. Adkins, looks bigger and still just as fast. Bear Woods, I just like seeing that guy on the field.

CB: Chevis Jackson had a very nice game and a pick. Domique Franks can tackle, but he did get beat pretty bad on a stutter-and-go by KC #8, ball was overthrown, but would have been an easy TD. Grimes, didn't notice anything. Dunta and Williams out.

S: Decoud, man this guy can hit and cover. Nothing really popped out except that Schillenger, made a good pick, and a very good return.

Special Teams:

KR: Weems had the best return of the night. No fumbles or boched catches.

PR: I only think they punted may 3 times, but I only recall Fair Catches.

K: I think Bryant gets the job. His leg is stronger than I thought.

LS: No bad snaps.

Summary: I believe our defense is way ahead of we were last year. I am concered with our first string OL. However, our depth at every position is so much better than before. Our offense needs to work on execution and our no huddle was not impressive.

Mularkey just appears obsessed with running the ball up the middle on 1st and 10

Part of being a Run first team, but at the same time we're playing very vanilla plays, their not going to show what their going to do in the season.

Good Review, I have concerns of the o-line too, I saw Romburg with the first line offense and wondered who was out, because they did not the play the same with him in. Anybody else notice that? ;)

I actually do this for every game, my first time during the pre-season. I will do one after the next game, though it will have to be after the replay, so I can DVR it. Will also do the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Preseason Games. Here is what I look for in the games:

1st Preseason Game: Stay Healthy. I generally really only look at how we move, are we moving as a unit. Then I look at the Lines mainly. Then see who is standing out.

2nd Preseaon Game: Stay Healthy. More of the same, but I expect to see improvement in execution and better line play. Also, our Rookies should look better.

3rd Preseason Game: Stay Healthy, and I actually look at the play calling and see how we are approaching the game, because this is the only preseaon game where the coaching and scheemeing are done. I will be looking specifically at how Ryan takes the reigns.

4th Preseason Game: Stay Healthy and usually don't watch all of it. To excited for the season.

During the season, I usually do the review on Tuesdays after the game, Wed. for Monday night games.

Looked like a first preseason game to me. Hopefully they will smooth things out as they go. The thing that bothered me the most was the pass protection and Sam Baker getting beat. If he get's Ryan hurt I am going to personally kick him in the old supporter.

Offensive line, the left side, did not look good. Baker and Blaylock need to step up their game, they need to Rise UP!!!

Good post whiteKB

This defensive line has me very hopeful. It looks lke we have a lot of talent along the line and I'm of the opinion defense all starts in those trenchs. We were getting tons of penetration with only the 4 DL. It's a good sign, but I am hopeful this could continue in the regular season.

btw....I'll be diving the cenotes off Tulum in a couple of weeks!

Spoon was playing coverage last night and the fact they couldnt throw at him proves he was doing his job.

Spot on.

When other people were making plays, Spoon was taking out the lead blocker, covering the back out of the backfield, or blitzing.

He did his job and the defense was better for it.

I think this game had nothing but positives to look for in our up coming season. The most important thing we addressed this off season was our D-line and secondary, and both looked significantly better in comparison to last year, and remember Jerry and Robinson did not play. This is a huge positive as we have made improvements to our weakest areas and seem to have some real depth this year. Although the offense want firing on all cylinders that is expected as the defense is always much further along in the pre-season, our offense is still getting use to the play book and blocking schemes especially since KC played a 3-4, with that being said our run game was very solid and our passing game was decent except for a few mental lapses and dropped balls. I think this game shows that we will do big things this year, as we have made key improvements

+1 Nice gloss over the action. This is what a good poster looks like people, look and learn.

Good to see Jackson making me look smart...lol

I think our DB's have a nice amount of physicality, hopefully the real Robinson, Owens, and Grimes show up for the regular & postseason. I've also read our pass rush which is definitely exciting for us all.

We have to win in the trenches against 75% of teams but still compete with the other 25%. Blalock doesn't get the love he deserves here, at all. I'm hoping McClure got a little stronger this offseason and hearing Turner is back in form is great news. That guy is the best player on this team, we have to have him. I kind of hope CMS will sit him most of the preseason to keep him fresh. He doesn't need the reps, he's a veteran.

While I'm hoping for big things from Spoon I don't understand your logic. "The fact that they couldn't throw at him", could it have been that the player he was covering was like third option so just didn't come down to trying to throw at him.

Lets wait and see.
