Norwood May be on the Bubble

Recommended Posts

As everyone else has done their analysis, I decided to take a look at the probable final 53 myself and see for myself how this roster would be constructed assuming things happen the way I think. This is an interesting exercise as it puts players in perspective and shows where we may need to focus our observations. Anyway, Here goes with comments to follow:

QB(3) Ryan Redman JP Wilson See no suprises here.

RB(3) Turner Norwood* Snelling Have a big feeling that Dimitri Nance(UDFA) may take Norwoods job.

FB(2) Mughelli Klecko Klecko will also back up DT and play STs

TE(3) Gonzalez Peele Palmer I think Palmer beats Zinger for the third TE spot as 49 will be #4TE

WR(6) White Finneran Jenkins Douglas Meier Weems

I think Jenks injury guarantees we carry 6 and ST are also a factor

OL(10)Baker Blaylock McClure Dahl Clabo Ojinaka Reynolds Svitek Johnson Hawley

We carried 9 last year but need to develop two rookies thus 10.

DE(5) Abraham Anderson Sidbury Bierman Davis

Davis on the bubble but I think staff likes him.

DT(4) Jerry Babineau Peters Walker

Anderson and Klecko can also cover thus Lewis/Johnson get cut.

LB(6) Lofton Nicholas Peterson Wetherspoon Adkins Wire

I really am pulling for the Bear but realistically...no chance.

CB(5) Robinson Owens Grimes Jackson Franks

Williams old and slow despite Smittys love.

S(3) DeCoud Coleman Moore Only 3 as two will be carried on the PS to start season. CJ covers

ST(3) Koenan Bryant Zelenka Elams struggles showed us how important a snapper is.

Thats my probable 53 barring injuries or suprises. 8 DBs scares me a little but due to the numbers and talent available, I think that is our destiny. Maybe Brian Williams shows enough to get Chauncey Davis cut and we run 4DEs but other than that. I think this is our team.

PS: Dimitri Nance, Rafael Bush, Shann Schillinger, B Harvey, R Wolfe, and The Bear!

Norwood isn't going anywhere. Just because people on a message board feel his is hurt too much (which is a logical argument) doesn't mean the staff feel the same. If JA98 is still here I think Norwood is fine. Especially not for a UDFA that hasn't blown anyone out of the water.

And Thomas Johnson won't get cut. They like the way he plays and has improved this year. Peters just replaces Lewis IMO.

My 53 has Norwood on it for now. For what it is worth, I love the guy when healthy but I do see a threat from Nance and/or possibly Smith. A back up must play STs and I think it strange that we haven't seen Norwood on teams in the early going. Granted he has missed time, but it is a worry.

You seriously think Norwood is going to lose his job to Antone Smith?

This looks like a pretty good analysis.

Note: Despite the thread title I do not see where the poster indicates that Norwood won't be on the team. I think Nance and Smith go to the PS, but I worry a bit that N.O. will try and snag one of them.

My Differences:

Williams if healthy takes a spot as he can play any DB position in our scheme.

I also thought Chauncey might be on the bubble, though the unofficial depth chart that was released really muddied the waters for me. As many pointed out though the depth charts we have released in the past do not always dovetail completely with the way we deploy our guys in games.

Questions: Is it possible that we might send JP to the practice squad to free up a spot? Looking at everything it seems like we can cut to 54 but 53 is just difficult to envision.

Adkins is an OLB and we look flush with outsiders now. Being that Bear is a MLB and a good-sized lad isn't it possible if he shows out on special teams he might crack the 53? I know Petersen can play the middle, but he probably has enough responsibilities on the edges.

I think Smith could go on the roster as a like for like back up, but not take Norwood's play. we need two speed/agility backs what with Norwood's shakiness. That being said sign him to the practice squad activate him if we need him rather than carrying 4 backs on the roster. I don't think it gets handed to him, but should the opportunity come for him to Rise Up. Then why shouldn't he be considered.

I do not know about Norwood but both A. Smith and Nance have looked good so far. Yea, they got a long way to go.

But I have a comment on T. Johnson, I thought he did a good job last year (not great but good)

However he may well fall to the numbers game this year.

The Falcons normally keep 5 DE and 4 DT.

At DT you have Babs, Jerry, Peters more or less locks on 3 slots.

That leaves T Johnson, V Walker, T Lewis competing for only 1 slot.

I would say at the end of last year Johnson would win this - but I do not know now.

ALSO I do not see them cutting Walker (a draft choice) over Jackson right now

However, I think you are right in that Lewis will be one of the two being cut.

Also remember that JA98 is also playing DT so I do noit think they will keep more than 4 others.

Isn't it true that if a guy is on the practice squad, he can be picked up by any team? He would be gone in a heartbeat.

Also, if you have been in the pros for a certain amount of years, I'm pretty sure you are not eligable to be on the practice squad. (I could be wrong)

No, not crazy at all in my mind. Tough tough decisions to be made. Smitty cannot keep everyone he wants and I think Svitek is the only backup lineman from last year who has a job locked...

Agree and you have to think that we aren't sold on Oji. He is only 26 so I have to believe they wouldn't have drafted Johnson if they were.

You are right on both counts dude. It is a tricky situation. I'd look for New Orleans hair brained coach to take one defensive and one offensive ps player off of us, and ply them with Bourbon for information.... Degenerates <_<

I actually think they'll keep Lewis over Johnson, he's younger, bigger, fast, and more big play potential.

You have to remember this is Trey's second full season since his knee problems and he's moving around very well.

Hawley may end up on the P.S. Dude has been abused all through camp.

Romberg has much more experience and has played well. He also participated in the MMA

training.

DL is the hardest to predict. I would say that T. Johnson has a good chance of making the

team. But once you start breaking down the numbers it's hard to fit them all on the roster.

Peters a lock? Maybe not. But with Babs suspension for one game, we may keep an extra DLman

until after the Steelers game.

One thing is for certain: the best players will make the roster. Regardless of draft position or

future expectations our coaching staff will field the best 53 players for the 2010 season.

In that regard, i'm not so sure Hawley or Peters would be viable choices for this year. The experience

of Romberg and Johnson may make the difference.

Edit: on a side note, William Moore is far from a lock to make this team. And Norwood will definitely make the 53.

no i think they will carry 5 DT and 6 WR svitek and reynolds have good potential for the oline but 2 guys where drafted but surely to replace the older guys on the squad. i think corner will be a owens, drob, grimes and williams, chevis may be going to the p.s. but at this point williams is more versitile and experienced but i think it will be temporary.

i think lewis can make the team at DT with a heavy rotation i think he will carry over. DT is always a position where one guy is banged up some how. but ever since i saw him get the 1 handed int. i have been a fan. big play potential at DT.

LB is a place where some guys go the PS adkins will most likely be that guy along with another back up. coy played last year ahead of adkins so i expect him to make the team peterson plays weak side and in the middle so most likely whoever is behind both of those guys will also be PS, robert james?.

safety i think we will carry only 4, moore, decoud coleman and giordianno, though i would like to see schilinger get some snaps but giordianno has value on ST. JPW may go on the PS if things get tight. rotation is huge on our defense so i think all the available spots will be saved for defense except WR. we need 6 at this point

The answer to this won't be known until the day of last cuts, but you have opened up how challenging it's going to be to whittle this group down to 53...and I love it! This is one deep team we have. The final guys will be our team but I won't be surprised if we see some familiar names moving on. Could it be Norwood?..maybe, but when healthy, he's amazing. If he's healthy, he stays for sure. If injuries keep nagging at him, I really don't know.

Until we have someone that can fill Norwood's role (speedy back that's dangerous in space) he's not going anywhere. I do agree with the idea that this may be his last year with us and if he's not productive.

I have enjoyed watching Norwood over the past few years, but he is consistently injured now and I have concerns that he'll never be what he was for us. Guess we'll see. Hopefully I'm wrong.
