The last-place Seattle Mariners have fired manager Don Wakamatsu.

The team announced the move hours before Monday night's game against Oakland.

Seattle entered the day 42-70, the second-worst record in the American League. The Mariners began the season with expectations of their first postseason since in nine years, following a winning 2009 in Wakamatsu's first season.

But a poorly constructed roster has produced the worst offense in baseball and doomed them to 22 1/2 games behind first-place Texas in the AL West.

All the reports coming out lately have said he lost the respect of a lot his players the way he handled the Griffey situation

Well he really shouldn't have been put in that position with regards to Griffey. The manager shouldn't be the one to have to tell a franchise icon that he's going to get a reduced role with the team because Wakamatsu didn't make the move to re-sign Griffey in the off-season even though many questioned the move when it happened. The GM should have grown some balls and took responsiblity for that.

They needed to look into firing their GM first. They needed power in that lineup, not Chone Figgins.

Yep and they had a pretty good power hitter in Russell Branyan in 2009 and let him walk and traded for Casey Kotchman instead! Major mistake!

They got a little bit too focused on pitching and defense and forgot that great pitching and defense do you no good if you can't score.

Didn't they trade back for him?
