Who’s going to start for Babineaux against the Steelers?

7:00 am August 4, 2010, by D. Orlando Ledbetter

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons coach Mike Smith and defensive line coach Ray Hamilton received some timely news on Tuesday.

The early training camp announcement that Jonathan Babineaux will be suspended for one game and fined an additional pay check allows them time to work a plan for his replacement for the Pittsburgh game on Sept. 12.

Here’s a look at their options:

1. Peria Jerry and Thomas Johnson. Jerry would have to get fully healthy and show something in the exhibition games. Johnson started 11 games last season in Jerry’s spot and is having a great training camp.

2. Peria Jerry and Jamaal Anderson. Anderson is slated to play tackle in passing situations, but they could slide him down inside and start veteran Chauncey Davis with John Abraham at defensive end.

3. Peria Jerry and Vance Walker. Walker was Babineaux’s back up last season and probably has the most similar skill set on the roster.

4. Peria Jerry and Trey Lewis. Lewis played the nose tackle last season behind Johnson. But since Smith is just

denoting the tackles as right and left tackle instead of nose tackle and under tackle, maybe he doesn’t mind starting two stout big boy tackles. They would be assigned to simply smash the A gaps.

5. Peria Jerry and Corey Peters. The rookie from Kentucky got some action with the first team defense on Tuesday. Babineaux was getting a rest day and his inactivity had nothing to do with his suspension. Smith has noted that Peters is doing a good job. He’ll have to keep performing to win over Hamilton’s trust.

Now, you have to consider some more options if Jerry has a setback on his road to recovery. If Jerry is not ready to start the season, here are some additional options.

1. Thomas Johnson and Vance Walker.

2. Thomas Johnson and Jamaal Anderson. Again with Davis starting at end and either Lawrence Sidbury or Kroy Biermann coming in on passing downs.

3. Thomas Johnson and Corey Peters.

4. Trey Lewis and Corey Peters.

5. Trey Lewis and Vance Walker.

Which option do you like at defensive tackle for the season opener at Pittsburgh on Sept. 12?

I think it will all depend on who is healthy week 1 and who has a good camp and pre-season.

-If Jerry is in fact healthy then he will get the start at one position. If Peters isn't ready I would say Walker. They said his skill set is like Babs so why not. If not why not slide Anderson down and let Beirmann start.

-If Jerry is not healthy enough to start the game I think it will be between Walker/Peters/Johnson.

I would really like to see how Anderson does at DT and also to give Beirmann an oppurtunity to start. I don't think Davis should start. We have young players who should be getting experience especially early in the season. Why not let them play

look they normally keep 4 DTs

Babs, Jerry, Peters have 3 slots tied up

that means Johnson, Walker, Lewis are all competing for 1 open slot

with JA98 taking up a DE slot but sometimes being the #5 DT

It means that only one of Johnson, Walker and Lewis will be on the 53 man roster at game 1.

So picking starters now is kind of phony espically when you list players that will probably not be on the roster then.

We have a rotation, all will play so i dont see it matters all that much who starts. They will all get some snaps some more, some less.

Bingo. We have a winner! All this attention about who plays on the opening play of the game is so much poppycock. Who plays in the 4th quarter with the game on the line. Now that is a question worth discussing.

I'm not sure on this but with Babs being suspended for the game he wouldn't count against the 53 would he? If so... all 3 will be on the 53.

CBS Sportsline Rapid Report-

"The Falcons have yet to release a depth chart, but DT Vance Walker is the likely replacement for suspended Jonathan Babineaux. Walker, who backed up Babineaux last season, has had a strong camp."

Its crazy to think about the youth and depth we are developing. Lost in the shuffle of PJ, Peters, Babs, we forget we have a guy who could be a diamond in the rough pick from late in last years draft. I like what ive seen from Vance, and he seems to be really progressing. Its not an ideal situation, but I think we will be ok without the USS for one game.

Yeah ... Walker started to really come on the end of last season and started a couple of games.

I think he is going to be a stalwart in the rotation for the foreseeable future.

Babs-Jerry-Peters-Walker with JA98 thrown in ... we should be in good shape this year.

The Defensive Line plays in rotations. It doesnt matter who starts. Its not a big deal.

This is the point being missed here. If Jerry and Anderson start at defensive tackle, there's a big chance there will be another in one of their places the very next snap. If they come out with heavy personnel running an I formation, I'd expect to see Jerry and Johnson. If they come out three-wide from the shotgun, I'd expect to see Jerry and Anderson.
