Atlanta

Matt Bryant vs. Steven Hauschka, placekicker

Once upon a time the Falcons had one of the game's best kickers in Morten Andersen. Now they roll the dice with two guys who drew pink slips last year. Hauschka never made it through the season in Baltimore, with the Ravens tired of his inability to make big kicks. He has a strong leg, with Baltimore originally signing him to handle kickoffs, but he's not all that accurate. Taking over for Matt Stover last season, he had a chance to beat Minnesota ... but blew it. He had a chance to close the gap vs. Cincinnati but blew that one, too. He missed a field goal and had an extra point blocked against Cleveland. In all, he missed four of 13 field goals before the Ravens had enough and made the change. Bryant has a strong leg, too, nailing a 62-yard field goal in 2006, and he is more accurate -- a lot more accurate -- than Hauschka. He hit 82 percent of his attempts but was cut by Tampa Bay last season after blowing two field goals in a three-point loss to Washington. The Falcons can't afford to miss on a placekicker -- which is what happened last year when Jason Elam went south, and Atlanta suffered the consequences. The Falcons lost two games by three points, and if you turn those defeats into victories the Falcons are a playoff team. It's hard not to like Bryant here. He has the experience and the more accurate leg. Hauschka is hit-or-miss, and you can't live dangerously with your kickers if you're serious about making it to January. The Falcons tried that last season, and it cost them.

Edge: Bryant.

"Matt Bryant... hit 82 percent of his attempts but was cut by Tampa Bay last season after blowing two field goals in a three-point loss to Washington."

Actually, Matt Bryant was cut by Tampa Bay in a cost cutting move long before the regular season even began. His first NFL FG attempt in 2009 was as a member of the Falcons.

It seems the author has Bryant confused with Mike Nugent. And himself confused with a real journalist.
