Wii Knocked Out of Top Place During June

Recommended Posts

The games industry saw a six percent overall decline for June 2010, but a nice bump in hardware sales, led by Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, helped offset the number. Console units saw a 35 percent increase for the month.

According to the latest data from U.S. research firm NPD, the Xbox 360 saw an 88 percent jump compared to June sales last year. PlayStation 3 saw an 85 percent jump year over year.

Here are the hardware unit sales for June:

Nintendo DS - 510.7K

Xbox 360 - 451.7K

Wii - 422.5K

PlayStation 3 - 304.8K

PSP - 121.0K

"Hardware sales saw a notable uptick from May on an average sales per week basis, and all three current gen console systems saw unit sales increases over last year; in particular, the Xbox 360 and the PS3," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

"The Xbox 360 experienced its second largest non-holiday month after September '07 when Halo 3 launched, and the PS3 has now garnered 11 consecutive months of year-over-year unit sales increases."

Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption took the top spot for software sales again for the second straight month. Other May releases that stayed atop the list were Super Mario Galaxy 2 and UFC 2010: Undisputed.

Noticeably absent from this list are June release titles Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Transformers: War for Cybertron, and Green Day: Rock Band.

Here are the software sales for June:

Red Dead Redemption – Xbox 360 - 582.9K

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Wii - 548.4K

Red Dead Redemption - PS3 - 380.3K

New Super Mario Bros. Wii – Wii - 200.9K

Just Dance – Wii - 174.8K

Wii Fit Plus W/ Balance Board - WII

Toy Story 3 - NDS

UFC 2010: Undisputed - Xbox 360

LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 – Wii

UFC 2010: Undisputed - PS3

"Software sales are down, but the top 10 SKU's for the month sold comparably to what the top 10 did last June - game sales are more concentrated this year on the top-selling games," Frazier added.
