Ten at 10: Valdosta’s Jay Rome, Malcolm Mitchell tackle recruiting together

Material from sources other than the AJC is attributed. . . . Sorry it is posting so late today. I’ll sum up the delay in one word — toddler.

1. Valdosta’s Malcolm Mitchell and Jay Rome make almost all of their recruiting visits together. In fact, just this past week they went together to Alabama and Florida. But that doesn’t mean they’re offering themselves as a package deal. Teaming up for trips, they say, is just a matter of convenience. “We’ve been a lot of places together, but schools aren’t recruiting us together as far as get one to get both,” said Mitchell, a defensive back with about 16 offers. “It’s just that we’re both good players from the same place.” Mitchell (6-foot-1, 185 pounds) said it’s down to Alabama, Florida and Georgia for him. Rome (6-6, 240) is considered by Scout.com to be the No. 1 tight end in the nation. He is approaching 30 scholarship offers but is down to a final four of Alabama, Clemson, Florida and Georgia. Nevertheless, he and his father, Clemson alum Stan Rome, recently decided he wouldn’t be making his decision any time soon. “I’m thinking maybe around Under Armour all-star game,” Rome told me Monday.

2. Dexter Moody would like the chance to come back and play for Georgia. But would — or should — the Bulldogs take him back? Moody (6-2, 210), a linebacker from Emmanuel County Insititute, is entering his second year at Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College, where he was redshirted last season. Moody signed with Georgia in 2009 but had his LOI revoked by UGA after he was dismissed from the school for a serious disciplinary infraction. Moody told HuskersIllustrated.com he’d like to come back to Georgia or at least to the South to complete his college football career. He recently received his first scholarship offer from Nebraska. He plans to graduate after fall semester and will have three years of eligibility remaining.

3. Georgia and Tech have 21 commitments between them here at the end of June. But if a new NCAA proposal is approved, prospects won’t even be able to receive offers until July 1 of the summer between their junior and senior years. An NCAA committee announced last week that it will back that proposal, which would apply to all sports. Coaches also would have to receive high school transcripts documenting at least five semesters or seven quarters worth of academic work for a young recruit before they can offer a scholarship.

4. Is he a commitment or not? That’s a question even Rahim Cassell could not answer over the weekend. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound linebacker from Lakewood, Calif., told several media outlets he committed to Florida this past week only to find out in subsequent reports from other agencies that the Gators did not accept his commitment, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

5. Speaking of Florida, you can take another wide receiver of Georgia’s board. Ja’Juan Story of Brooksville Fla., committed to the Gators on Monday. The 6-4, 190-pound athlete had narrowed a list of two dozen offers down to the Bulldogs, FSU and Notre Dame and Florida before picking the Gators. Word is, UF has accepted his commitment.

6. OL Errin Joe, an impressive offensive lineman from Lakeland, Fla., visited Georgia Tech last Friday, according to JacketsOnline.com. The nation’s 15th-ranked offensive guard (per Rivals) liked what he saw from the Yellow Jackets. “We talked about the expectations at Georgia Tech as a student-athlete and what I can expect from them as my coaches,” Joe told Kelly Quinlan. “Tech is a place where you can compete for a national championship every year and get one of the best degrees in the country”I liked the layout of the campus and the facilities. . . . I really like Georgia Tech a lot and they are a school I am seriously considering.”

7. LB Ben Councell of Asheville, N.C., committed to Notre Dame over Georgia Tech on Monday, according to IrishEyes.com. Councell, the 12th verbal commitment for the Fighting Irish, is Rivals’ 28th-ranked outside linebacker. He just visited Tech last week.

8. Carver-Columbus running back Isaiah Crowell, one of the state’s top prospects, isn’t going to make a decision for a long while, it seems. He tells SuperPrep.com’s Allen Wallace he likes to “make ‘em wonder.” Crowell is down to Alabama, Clemson, Florida State and Georgia. He said he has visits planned to FSU on July 17 and Georgia on July 30.

9. LB Ramik Wilson (6-3, 221) of Tampa’s Jefferson High was recently offered a scholarship by Georgia. “Georgia was great,” Wilson told ESPN.com’s Jamie Newberg. “I went up there and got the offer. I like the coaching staff and the defensive scheme. . . . . The main thing I am looking at is playing time. I want to contribute as a freshman.” Wilson has more than 20 scholarship offers, including Texas Tech, USF, Cincinnati, Arkansas and UCF. He had 120 tackles and 14 sacks as a junior last season.

10: THIS & THAT: UGA quarterback pledge Christian LeMay enters Week Three of his wait to learn his disciplinary fate from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. . . . The Seminoles are latest to offer super snapper Nathan Theus of Jacksonville, Fla. Theus and his younger brother, 2012 OT John Theus, received offers from UGA earlier this month. . . .
