Police identify man killed on motorcycle

A man who was killed over the weekend on his first motorcycle ride was identified by Roanoke police on Monday as Raul Gula Torres, 31, of Roanoke.

Torres was pronounced dead Saturday shortly after he crashed a friend's motorcycle into a telephone pole in the 1200 block of Tazewell Avenue Southeast.

Chris Patterson, the owner of the Kawasaki ZX, said Torres had never driven a motorcycle. Patterson offered to teach him, and Torres crashed seconds after driving away.

The bike had a racing engine, and could reach 65 mph to 70 mph in two seconds, Patterson said.

Police did not say whether Torres was wearing a helmet.

The wreck was one of three in the area since Friday. A motorcyclist crashed in the 4600 block of Cove Road Northwest on Friday. His name was not released, and information about his condition was not available.

On Sunday, Keaton McKee III, 48, of Roanoke County and his passenger, Freda McKee, crashed in Franklin County on Virginia 122 north of Virginia 116. Keaton McKee was in serious condition Monday at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, spokeswoman Allie Buth said. She did not have information about Freda McKee's condition.
