Falcons awaiting ruling from league on Babineaux

The Falcons are still awaiting word from the league on whether DT Jonathan Babineaux will be disciplined for violating the league's personal-conduct policy. Babineaux, Atlanta's top three-technique, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute in December 2009, and the team has been concerned about a potential suspension ever since. His off-field issues played a role in the Falcons' decision to draft DT Corey Peters in the third round, and Peters, who signed with Atlanta on Tuesday, could see significant playing time early if Babineaux is suspended. The drop-off at the position could be significant if Peters, projected as a fifth- to sixth-round pick by PFW, has to fill in. Babineaux is considered the best three-technique in the NFC South and he made a career-high six sacks, which led the team, last season. He's signed through the 2013 campaign, but the Falcons, who are wary of negative media attention, won't show much patience if Babineaux gets into trouble again.

Every time this story surfaces I get mad at Babs for being such an idiot all over again.

He needs to get his house in order if he hasn't already or he can be an idiot elsewhere.

I think we'll be fine provided it's no longer than 4 games. We'll miss him, but without him we could still come out of those games 3-1 pretty easily. I'll be interested to see if Vance Walker continues to improve over the off season. He was playing very well at the end of the season last year.

This is a garbage report. First Bab's was charged with having over an ounce not with intent to distribute (per AJC). This incident played a role in the Falcons drafting Peters is pure speculation as this has not been stated anywhere else nor would Dimitroff make that statement. Third according to PFW's own mockery draft he was slated to go in the 5th or 6th when Holmgren said they were wanting take take Peters in the 3rd but since he was gone ended up with Colt McCoy.

Does someone at PFW need me to do their research for them? I'll swap for cold beer and hot wings.

It will be reduced. It's only at intent to distribute now because of how much weed they had. But it's obvious he's not a dealer, he just has the money to buy his stash in bulk, lol.

Gwinnett county is ultra conservative & has a history of reducing this charge to a misdemeanor possession with like a few months probation, a small fine, & maybe a bit of community service if even that.

It's his first blip on the radar for the NFL too. He has no history of misconduct & with a reduced charge the Goodell could do anything from 1-4 games with 2 being the likeliest.

He smokes weed, big deal. The stuff should be legalized & likely will be in the next 5-10 years. I'd bet dollars to donuts that probably 75% of the players in the NFL smoke weed & they know it. If he gets 4 games for this, I'll be very surprised. This should be a slap on the wrist just for being dumb & getting caught.

Because he's a Falcon he may get off with a fine and some probation. If it was one of us they'd bury us under the jail house.

Just so my first post is clear I agree with your highlighted statement....It's the driving around with the expired tags, having an apparently no count friend with you....etc. etc..

C'mon Babs....use your your head for something more than just a place to park your helmet.

Every time this story surfaces I get mad at who ever is bringing it up because I'm hoping the NFL will forget about it.

I hear ya. But I kinda want to get this thing out of the way now. My biggest fear is that they won't rule on this until after the season starts and we have this thing hanging over our heads all season long. Might bring back memories of YKW.

Really?

I'd say I am fairly liberal, and whilst the 'driving around' is clearly the MOST stupid part, part of me feels that as a professional sportsman, he shouldn't be taking drugs.

I understand the argument that just because they are sports players in the public eye, they shouldn't have to forfeit sections of their social lives, but:

If I was offered millions of dollars to do a job which I loved, involved working with friends, keeping fit and being adored/worshipped/respected by thousands of people, and in return I had to stay away from alcohol, drugs and prostitutes, I think I would consider it a pretty good deal.

There's nothing particularly malicious or hurtful in this sort of crime, so more than anything, he's guilty of stupidity, but still, I don't think there can be any excuses.
