Reports on USC punishment much worse than many thought.

It may sound tough, but losing a few scholarships or giving back a trophy amounts to very little in the way of punishment. That's a slap on the wrist and hardly a deterrent for cheating.

If the NCAA were really interested in punishing cheaters, they would do what they once did and hit them where it counts, in the wallet. That means a ban from television and postseason.

But I'm doubting that's what will happen here.

actually that is part of their punishment with bowl bans for football and basketball ban from post season play. i don't believe they get away without some postseason ban, but we will see.

Doesn't really mean a lot for the current situation since they were fully entering a rebuilding period with the departure of all their impact players and Pete Carrol.

i hate to disagree but a bowl ban and loss of scholarships does indeed hurt.. it hurts with rebuilding and for those of us who think they are rebuilding they sure don't think they are.. they don't think they will miss a beat, they have a lot of talent over there.

I think more than anything you will see Lane Kiffen really have to fight his way out of a hole here. This puts pressure on him to recruit the absolute best players for the schollys they have left and convince some of those high profile guys that this wont hurt their image.

not sure what you read, but i read it was 2 year ban and 20 scholarships.. i believe that may be too steep, but that was one thing i read earlier today.

Of course they don't think they are... Kiffin is an arrogant SOB. They do have a lot of talent over there, but talent alone is not enough. They didn't do too great last year and they lost pretty much every key contributor on both sides of the ball. Matt Barkley may become one of the top college QBs, but he is surrounded by guys that have to grow into starting roles and impact the team.

They are going to still try and go out and win every game and kids are still gonna want to go to USC. A 2 year ban does not hurt them when they are talking to kids who won't see the field for those 2 years anyways. A lot of the guys that are there right now it kinda hurts, but Kiffin is going to turn it into an "us against the world" spin anyways and those kids will be motivated to beat everyone they play so the media can keep calling them the best.

carter this is going to hurt them a lot.. you don't lose 20 scholarships and get a 2 year post season ban and it not hurt a lot.. kiffin's margin of error is very small now and in college football a lot these players are stepping in right away and with the loss of scholarships they don't have the chance to have many mistakes. we just won't agree on that man. :D

how does the loss of 20 scholarships work? Is it a loss of 20 scholarships over X amount of years or 20 per year for x amount of yearS?

Its gotta be 20 over X amount of years. The other option would leave USC able to recruit about 5 scholarship players a year. While bad, thats probably a little overboard for what they did.

Unfortunately the other culprits in this matter will skate away but at least the NCAA has FINALLY done something to try to punish USCalfornia. I would have liked to see some TV bans and monetary compensation to the teams it would affect but the Trojans are the money maker out west so...

This is a big hit and the more I read the worst it gets for usc.. they have 2 years of post season bans and for 18 years olds 2 years is an eternity. They are losing more than 20 scholarships and that will affect their recruiting a lot, losing an entire class of players is going to hurt them for a while. They expect a number of guys to transfer. Also it looks like the heisman group will remove reggie bush from winning the heisman since we was not eligible to win it which is a great thing. If the wins are vacated the committee will go usc and take back the bcs trophy. there are also other recruiting restrictions that will affect how they can recruit as well as losing the scholarships.. huge blow.. huge.
