One of my favorite UDFAs

Recommended Posts

Name: Deryn Bowser

College: Akron

Size: 6'1, 210 lbs

Akron Production (2 years) in 18 games: 85 catches, 1,089 yards, 9 TDs.

Junior College Production in 20 games: 109 catches, 1,764 yards, 19 TDs.

Deryn Bowser went undrafted for several reasons: he played on a crappy team, he played on a crappy offense where he was the only good player (his QB was really bad), he didn't have any statistically dominating seasons, and he ran a very poor 40 time of 4.72 seconds.

There was another WR with a similar build to Deryn Bowser that also caught a lot of flack for running a slow (4.71 second) 40 time, and his name was Jerry Rice. Now I'm not saying that Bowser will become the next Jerry Rice, or anything close to that, but they have a lot of similarities about their game and you can see that when watching film of him.

He has sneaky deep speed, he is a great route runner, he just knows how to get open, he has great concentration catching the ball, he has phenomenal hands, he can go up and get the ball with a defender draped on him, he is a good after-the-catch runner (rarely goes down on first contact), he is sneakily elusive with the ball in his hands, and he is a good blocker that gives a ton of effort.

I don't know if Bowser will be able to separate from CBs in the NFL, but there were similar concerns for Jerry Rice and he managed to separate just fine due to his natural ability and instincts to get open and his route running. I think Bowser can get open for the same reasons.

I'd like to bring Bowser in as a project of sorts and as someone who can compete for the #4 WR job. If the FO can look past his poor timed speed, we could end up getting a very naturally talented WR who could be a very good role player on this team.

And his name is 'Bowser'. Big question is, will he be better than Tampa Bay's WR Mario Urrutia?

I don't know why that's the big question, and honestly I have no idea.

Marques Colston was very close to going undrafted, and he ended up being a very good WR in the NFL.

Troy Williamson was taken in the Top 10, and he hasn't amounted to anything.

WRs are a crap shoot, but I like Bowser for his natural ability, work ethic, and amazing hands.

Just making reference to the famous Mario - Bowser rivalry that exists in the Nintendo world. Because I'm cool like that...

The Arizona Cardinals scooped up Bowser. This could actually be an ideal fit for Bowser.

Depending on the play of Leinhart, Bowser could flourish as a slot WR in multi-WR sets with Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston drawing away most of the attention. As said above, he isn't a burner but he knows how to get open, has great hands, is tough and fearless across the middle, and is good with the ball in his hands after the catch.

If he sticks in AZ, he could end up being a very valuable slot WR, or maybe a split end down the line.
