hodgec2
Alright guys below is what I think about our defense going forward. DEI see no reason why a Division 2 DE in his 3rd year will not improve. He had 6 or 8 sacks as a rotational guy. I think Bierman will have a monster year this year. It just makes since if you look at his first 2 years in the league that Kroy is about to be an impact player. I also feel Sidbury being in his 2nd year out of D2 will have significant improvement like Bierman did last year. As far as Abe goes I think he will be somewhere between 2008 and 2009. He won't have 16.5 halfs, but will have more than 6. Chauncy and Jamaal are both good against the run and will be good in rotation.DTI do think Peters was drafted not only as depth, but also as insurance for Babs suspension and Jerry's knee. Our rotation of Walker, Jerry, Babs, Jamaal and Peters will keep Olines on their heels. They are not space eaters but relentless penetrating guys (that's what she said) that will make the interior of an oline continue to work.LBHopefully our starters are Spoon, Nicholas and Lofton. Spoon and Lofton will be 3 down linebackers and Nicholas will be 2 downs. Both Nicholas and Spoon can get to the QB, which will allow us to blitz more. Also, Spoon immediately helps pass coverage. Mike Pete is the perfect back up because he can play all 3 positions and Wire is a core special teams guy that can step in for Spoon in the nickel if needed.CBMy guess is our core CBs will be Robinson, Grimes and Owens. The rookie and Chevis will be added depth. Brian Williams should be listed as CB/S. I think this group is a huge upgrade from last year and will allow BVG to have a more attacking defense.SThe coaches are hoping that Moore wins the SS job and of course Decoud will be our FS. If this happens Coleman could easily be the backup at SS and possibly FS. Do not be surprised to see Brian Williams play some safety alongside Decoud in passing situations. Overall if healthy (Big IF) I think this defense has the chance to be noticeably better than last year. Listening to Thomas D over the last week or so I will be shocked and very disappointed if we are not a blitzing team this year. I think they now have confidence in the back end of our defense to take more chances in the front 7. My thoughts, kill it or endorse it, I don't care. Misznay-Schardin
We didn't run a bend but don't break last year. This is why we gave up more big plays, but were far better against the run and caused more turn overs. The problem we ran into was the utter inability for our CBs to consistently cover, and the inability to get to the QB do to problems along the line. It was still a work in progress, but we saw a glimpse of it early in the year and towards the end of the year.
The Don™
I can already see us putting our CBs into more man to man rather than zone...We want to become a more aggressive team

We did very little blitzing compared to the rest of the league. Had to because of Secondary. Not true. Compare us to blitzing teams like the Giants, and we actually blitzed MORE than them. We played a lot of man to man coverage, often brought a safety down into the box, did a lot of blitzes, and occasionally threw in zone blitzes as well. People have been so drawn into the rhetoric about the soft scheme we ran in 2008 that they didn't pay attention enough in 2009. We were a very aggressive defense last year, and sometimes suffered because of it.
sporkdevil
As long as VanGorder stays the Falcons DCoordinator they will stay with the vanilla no pressure defense.Hard to argue. When we did blitz last year, our coverage was so bad it was almost always complete. With better coverage, we should have the option to notch up the pressure. I just hope BVG decides to do it. Dharma Initiative
The bend don't break is the biggest BS I've seen for a defense. If we still look like that this season then BVG needs to go.

Not sure if it was an injury or teams figuring him out. Our DEs got 13 sacks last year and dropped the defense to 26th in sacks. The questions are will Abe come back? Will Biermann rise up? Will Busterson and Chauncey get more than 1.5 sacks? Or will TD bring in a late camp FA DE that can get us an 8-9 sack average from the LDE position like Kerney and Archambeau did in all but one year between 97-06?DTI do think Peters was drafted not only as depth, but also as insurance for Babs suspension and Jerry's knee. After that? Big time question marks.LBHopefully our starters are Spoon, Nicholas and Lofton. Spoon and Lofton will be 3 down linebackers and Nicholas will be 2 downs. Misznay-Schardin
Don't believe me on this? Go back and watch various highlights on our defense(good and bad). Most of the time, you see 5 or more guys rushing and generally man coverage on the outside. We were NOT a BBDB team last year.

BankerBird™
As long as VanGorder stays the Falcons DCoordinator they will stay with the vanilla no pressure defense. This was my biggest pet peeve with our team last year: predictability on defense. On almost EVERY down, we'd just sit back there in our usual 4-3 set with no motion, no disguise, no noticable adjustments - nothing. But, if you'll watch the post-Draft video with Dimitroff, he explicitly states that we will be "more creative" on defense. I just hope he's right about that. The FO has said multiple times that Williams was brought back to play inside and for his experience, not to start opposite Dunta. Grimes is currently our #2 CB, with Owens competing with him to try and move up from the Nickel slot. Smitty/BVG doesn't run a BBDB defense, he does what he has to. We play aggressive in 08, we are bottom of the league in points allowed with the Lions. We weren't a BBDB D in 2009, we blitzed more than the Giants of all teams. We gave up more points and big plays because of this, but caused more turnovers.

Post some Glanville Gritzblitz, 98 Brooks Smash, Wade 3-4 butt kicker or some Claude/Nobis clips if you want to see some real as beatin defense. Don't fall in a Gazoo trap and get caught up in coach speak internet articles. If Williams is healthy these boys will have a hard time unseating him. He knows how to play the coverages. Grimes got his job taken by Foxworth, Williams, Owens and Tye Freakin Hill at LCB. Owens couldn't win the open competition at LCB. Chevis is flat out lost. Williams has forgotten more NFL plays than all of them combined. We run a BBDB. It has nothing to do with blitzes (ineffective blitzes by the way). It has more to do with the soft zones we play in the backfield. I have seen some sorry as QBs light them zones up bro. In 08 and 09. I really don't ever want to see that again. Perhaps you don't know what a BBDB defense is. What did Mora call em? Empty yards?
