atljbo
In a post i did before the draft..... I was saying that we can either draft a impact DE with the 19th pick or draft a penetrating DT (first 3 picks) that can play in a rotation with Babs and Peria Jerry.... I honestly think Derrick Morgan or Brandon Graham was our 19th pick if either was on the board.... Neither was on the board so we took the impact LB.... Spoon is not a fall back guy because he was on our top 5 list... We got the impact LB that will help us in coverage and as a blitzer so all is well.So TD decided to go the DT direction...I looked at a couple of games again and i cant lie.... Kroy was even better then i thought.... Kroy Biermann is not one of those beastly DE's that will make everybody else on his D-Line better because he is such a beast or dominant on his own (not saying this in a bad way)... He is more of a Patrick Kerney/ Kyle Vanden Bosch type DE.... Those guys were good DE's during there prime... If you look back... Kerney and Vanden Bosch had their top notch seasons when they other good players on their D-Line... Kroy is one of those guys.... Abraham is on the other side and now we should have a really good penetration up the middle with 3 penetrating DT's... Babs is coming off injury so we dont want to over work him early and Babs took to many snaps last year (over worked him) ... Corey Peterson will help out with that. Also Sidbury showed some promise in his limited snaps last year.... We should be able to see his 4.5 speed off the edge since he has a season under his belt.... So Sid should see more snaps also.Sidenote: We should have some really good position battles this training camp.....WR: We all know Roddy, Jenkins, and Douglas are safe.... Fin and Weems will be in a battle for their WR spot.... Kerry Meier looks like a faster Fin clone and Ryan Wolfe is one of those chain moving Wes Welker slot WR's TD likes.DT: Peria and Babs are safe..... We just draft Corey Peters in the 3rd round so he is nearly safe also.... That leaves Thomas Johnson and Vance Walker to fight for the last DT spot... Lets remember that JA98 is bulking up to play some DT also... SO IDKCB:This is going to be a really good battle..... Dunta Robinson, Chris Owens, and Brent Grimes are safe.... Chevis Jackson, Brian Williams, and Dominique Franks will battle for the other spots.SS: William Moore vs Erik ColemanTE: Tony G is Safe... I wouldnt say Peelle is safe but he is close... Zinger, Colin Peek (a steal as a UDFA) , Michael Palmer, and my dark horse TE Leroy Banks
millenium falcon
if franks wins PR/KR job and wolfe can get snaps on offense, weems days in ATL are over.
Da_Truth
I agree that pressure can come up the middle as well--and not just from the DEs. By getting consistent pressure up the middle with Babs, Jerry or Peterson it will open up things on the ends. And don't forget we can bring our LB off the edge or on delayed blitz up the middle as well. We have a number of options to get after the QB with our improved secondary (at least on paper for now). Jaymadd
I agree man I think that when Morgan and Graham fell off the board the better bet was to get another pass rushing DT to bolster our rotation and pass rush. I think that DT class was deeper and more talented than the DE class so i completely understand why TD did that. I also agree with the camp battles:WR - I think that Mier probably has taken that spot by finn, but I wouldnt rule out Finn coming back as an assistant if he doesnt get picked up by another team. I also think that Wolfe will probably be on the PS if he cant beat out WeemsTE- This is interesting. Peek and Palmer both come from Pro-Style schemes, and I do think that Peek is of a Justin Peele mold but a better blocker, so Peele might be up for some comp, but I think that Zinger will be cut. I also can see Palmer on the PS. DT - I am really excited about our DT rotation. I like the combo of Jerry, Babs and Peters. I think that Trey Lewis is probably on the cutting block, but I do think that Walker will stick, because he is young and showed improvement throughout the year and I wonder about Johnson too. I hate to see Johnson get cut but it is what it is. CB - This position is goign to be interesting especially when we drafted Franks. If Franks can show he has return value then I think he sticks. I think that Williams might be placed on the PUP list for a minute, but he could be the one cut
Beezy
Honestly, I was a little worried about not drafting a DE.... but,You hit the nail on the head!An inside pass rush will only open our DE pressure and we got a vet and a couple young studs to take advantage of that. Not to mention, Spoon and Nicholas have strong pass rush skills too.Great o-line competition and depth.A great depth and competition in the secondary. Some good posession receivers that have great hands!I am excited for training camp!GO Falcons! nativefalcon
Good read, Bierman should be in his early prime this year. Kerney was in his 3rd year, and this is Kroys 3rd. It all depends on the DTs. Edited April 25, 2010 by nativefalcon

We want youngerplayers and now that we have Robinson, Williams is not just a needed vet. That injury was a serious injury. Ithink if any CB is let go it's Williams. If we don't keep 6 CB's then I see it this way.RobinsonOwensGrimesJacksonFranks

I believe the coaches will decide to have either 5 DTs or Johnson will lose out. Walker seems to have more potential and is younger.

Thats very unlikely especially with JA98 playing more DT also... A 5th DT is taking away from a DB,LB, TE,or WR that would also play special team... We will already carry 5 DE's.... I dont see us carrying 5 DT's... We might can sneak Walker on the PS if he doesnt win the 4th DT spot..... Last time the Panthers tried to get him tho. abstract
yeah, I agree with you. 1. Everybody(including myself) was talking about how we absolutely needed to get a DE in some fashion this off season. The front office obviously didn't view it as huge as a concern as us, and here's why. First of all, they believe the injury prone and inconsistent play of our DT's and lack of an interior pass rush hampered our DE's play and outside pass rush to an extreme degree. Not only does this mean that they still think that Abraham has plenty left in his tank, but they also believe that Sidbury and/or Biermann will step up big next season. So what did they do? They go out and grab a force in the interior of the D-line, in the underrated Corey Peters. Now no matter what happens, we'll have at least one interior pass rush threat in either Jerry or Peters. This draft pick alone, improves our pass rush heavily. That's an excerpt from a thread I made last night concerning the improvements made to our pass defense this year. It is too much good tape on these guys for them to not get pick up.
SWIFT HITTER
the Corey Peters pick was awful..unless TD is admitting he has a injury prone player in Jerry and Babs is facing suspension plus we plan to cut his cause he has character issues something TD is against

Babs might be suspended so I think that drafting that DT was a good move as a just in case measure and to improve our DT rotation. I do believe that we were looking at drafting a dT this year before Jerry got injured and the legal situation with BAbs. There were reports that we had scouted at least one DT (D'Anthony Smith) early in the college season.

At the very least, he'll take a couple of possessions off of jerry's knee. The lack of production at DT last year really killed our pass rush. TD and Smitty weren't going to chance having that lack of production this year. If we had solid minutes played on the interior of the D-line last year, our DE's would have fared much better. abstract
I don't think that the peters pick necessarily means that there is something wrong with jerry, but more so that our front office was so unhappy with the lack of production at DT last year that they found it necessary to draft some insurance. Jaymadd
oooooooooooooo so your admitting SWIFT was right all along about concerns about Jerry ..Gritzafmbkisser where are you ???I dont think that FAlcons have long term concerns but maybe concerns about him taking on too much at the start of the season, and with Knee injuries players take a little time to get to 100% both mentally and physically, just look Osi he didnt get back to 100 until mid season, so i expect a little delay from Jerry. I dont anticipate him being back to the REal Jerry immediately, but I dont think the Falcons have long term concerns about Jerry if that is what you are getting at.
