Pro Football weekly ..Falcons make odd choice with third round pick

Recommended Posts

Unless the Falcons are less than confident that DT Peria Jerry is recovering well from a torn ACL he suffered in Week Two last season — and there's no indication that he has encountered a setback — it's hard to figure out their third-round choice of Kentucky DT Corey Peters. He projects to play the three-technique in the pros.

With a glaring need at defensive end, the Falcons passed on a talented pass-rushing end in USC's Everson Griffen. It's nice to have depth at tackle, but Atlanta could regret passing on Griffen, unless he's still available when they make the last pick of the third round (98th overall).

Peters is a smart player. He lacks any impressive athletic traits, though, and could take time to develop before he's ready to consistently contribute.

After landing an exciting, fast-flowing player in Round One with the selection of WLB Sean Weatherspoon, the Falcons' third-round pick feels like a bit of a letdown.

No one knows yet but they will learn about Peters. Friend of mine plays on the university of kentucky football team and said that Peters is the focal point of the kentucky line and almost always gets double teamed. He also is a vocal leader on the field like spoon. He also is a good kid who has a work effort like no other. It seems like the Falcons are starting to build a defense of leaders who are smart and confident unlike old defenders like chris houston...

No. 83: Falcons select: Corey Peters, DT, Kentucky Grade B+

Analysis: He's a power player the Falcons need. He was a three-year starter for the Wildcats. He should be in the rotation as a rookie.

A lot of teams passed on Griffin so TD had lots of company. It sounds like Peters was a one man gang at Kentucky and he compares very favorably with Suh and the other first round DT crybaby with his combine numbers.

Swifty, don't hate, appreciate!

are you serious right now compares with Suh .?

Suh wasnt all combine if you watched him play he was a wrecking ball that stood out and one of best defensive prospect to come out in some time

Honestly, have you ever watched a UK football game? I don't think it is fair for you to pass judgement on a kid who you have never seen play. If you have watched more than one game then carry on...

Peters is not Suh but he had more of a supporting cast and his measureables are about the same plus we got Peters in the 3rd round. Do you really think Griffin is better than Kroy is right now? We both know that is very, very unlikely. If Bierman keeps progressing as he has in the last two years the LDE spot will not be seen as a problem.

I would not be suprised if Jamaal can't make the team in training camp just because he can't compete with the talent we have on the D-line. Maybe he can beat out Vance Walker but I wouldn't count on it.

:lol::lol: @ I get negatives for posting a article

You get negatives for being a know nothing whiner. You are whining about picks for players that you know nothing about.

Dimitroff and staff's wisdom is much greater than your "knowledge" gleaned from reading the sporting news draft preview guide.

Trivia Question: Besides Babineaux, who logged the most snaps at DT/NT for the Falcons in 2009.

Answer: Thomas Johnson, a player who the two years prior logged zero snaps. And with Johnson playing 13 games, we got 20 tackles out of him. So even with Peria back, fortifying that position was essential.

Pick was a waste keep dreaming pal

We finished top 10 in rush defense..with Thomas Johnson and Vance Walker....YUPPPPPPPPP

Corey Peters will see 3 to 7 plays a game

and make maybe 2 impact plays all season

Why would you only be measuring his value by what he would bring to the table his rookie year? I can't vouch for the quality of the player, only that Dimitroff thought more of him than other players like Geno Atkins, Arthur Jones and Al Woods who were bigger names. But the logic is sound...

well where do you see Corey Peters fitting into the equation next 4 seasons ..

Jerry and Babs are legit starters..

Thomas Johnson played fairly well last year ..would Corey Peters be any upgrade over him same can be said for Vance Walker

if anything Corey Peters will be looked on as a situational player over the next couple of years and as a third round pick you should look for more then that and a player who makes a impact as well

johnson can't continue to be productive given he is getting older, he was just the most experieinced guy left. we will see a heavier rotation. with a babs suspension, we have a new quality tackle where lewis or johnson may loose out. either way it will be good to increase competition at that level some one will be cut b/c of this move.

with a third round pick you dont look for a situational player...you look for a player that can be a starter by year 2 if not year 3 ..I cant see that with Babs/Jerry here and Vance Walker who played well

You do realize how often Smitty rotates his D-lineman, right?

Peria Jerry lasted two games before suffering a serious knee injury. While his talent is significant, he's injury prone dating back to college.

Even for as much as Babs played in 2009, he played in 80% of the Falcons defensive snaps. It might be wise to reduce that to the 70-75% range.

While Johnson was a nice surprise, he'll be 29 this season and had never done anything of consequence prior to 2009. Saying that he's someone we can count on based on one season where he was minimally productive is a stretch.

I liked Vance Walker, but he too is in a developmental stage of his career and is not guaranteed to emerge. So in the near term, Peters could become the swing DT in our base package and an LE/RE in 3-4 packages. So overall there is most definitely opportunity for someone in that swing tackle role to secure 400-450 snaps next season and beyond....which would be about 3-4 times more than your forecast on the top end.
