Overtones of 1998 Draft

Recommended Posts

Something I noticed, wanted to share with you guys.

When the Falcons first round pick came up in the 1998 draft, Randy Moss was the highest rated WR, and our team desperately needed a WR. If anyone thinks our team is bad off now, all we had back then was Terrance Mathis. A good WR, productive, but not a consistent All Pro talent like Moss proved to be.

But Dan Reeves ran the draft, and he wanted no part of Moss and his off field issues. So we drafted LB Keith Brooking instead. Did we need an LB, well yes, but for when Cornelius Bennett and Jesse Tuggle retired. We at least had servicable starters at LB who would help us get to the Super Bowl that year. Brooking played as a backup and on special teams all year.

Now to 2010. Many here wanted the Falcons to take WR Bryant, or WR Thomas. Both supposedly had issues, character or health wise. The Falcons passed on them to take an LB. True Weatherspoon fits a need, moreso than Brooking did. Yet, the similiarities between 1998 and now are kind of eerie, dont you think?

What issues did Thomas have health wise? He had a one time injury, not a history of injury. The correct pick was Weatherspoon, even if he JA98s and Bryant is the next Randy Moss.

That's kind of a stretch, I think. Tony Martin was no slouch as the "number 2" receiver - if you could even call him that.
