New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton discusses upcoming visit with free agent Jake Delhomme

By Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

March 11, 2010, 5:05PM

I spoke with New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton about the Saints' first week of free agency and their upcoming visit with quarterback Jake Delhomme, who is scheduled to arrive Friday.

Payton said he goes back with Delhomme, not only having competed against him in the NFC South, but that he spent a lot of quality time with him when Delhomme took a free agent visit to Dallas in 2003. Obviously, several Saints executives also know Delhomme well from his time in New Orleans from 1997-2002.

"He's someone we certainly have a lot of respect for, having competed against him," Payton said. "In his mind, I'm sure he's looking through his options, looking for place he might be able to start, if that exists. And if that doesn't exist, there could be a lot of reasons for him to come back here."

Delhomme, 35, will be the first quarterback to visit the Saints, who still could choose to bring back veteran backup Mark Brunell, who became an unrestricted free agent after his two years in New Orleans. Brunell is "very much in the mix," Payton said.

I guess Delhomme > Brunell at this point as a backup to Brees... but both are pretty bad.

I just threw up in my mouth a little. Jake is such a whiner and the thought of him being a saint is making me want to lay down. That being said brunell was terrible in the panthers game last year.

So I guess you spent 1999-2002 throwing up in your mouth.

Why do you care so much about who will be kneeling out blowouts anyway? Jake's not like Michael Vick in the sense that he doesn't have untold legions of obnoxious fanboys who still think he's a legitimate starting quarterback and would want to see "competition" in camp even though the starter is clearly established.

Saints should really sign and start him in the division games. He's a proven Peyton Manning duplicate when it comes to going up against the Falcons and he's the ultimate good luck charm when going against the Bucs. The Panthers would probably take the Saints place when it comes to him focusing his cajun rage on a team that he feels wronged him!

;) . ;) . ;) . ;)
