Mock Draft 1.0 (detailed)

Recommended Posts

1. Sean Weatherspoon OLB Missouri 6'1" 239lbs.

As an OKST fan, I have personally seen him play twice now, and he is all over the field every time we played them, and in other games that I have watched he really just stands out. It he has previous chemistry while playing with William Moore at Missouri, and I honestly think that Moore will be our starter at SS by the middle of the season if healthy. He is also good friends with Curtis Loften, which can only add to defensive chemsitry, and honestly you really can't put a measurable on the impact it can have on the defense.

Measurables at the combine:

40 Time: 4.68(8th), Bench Reps: 34(2nd), Vertical; 40(t-2nd)

On the field performance (last 3 season average):

131 TCKLS, 14 TFL, 4 SACKS, 6 PBU, 1 INT

I think he will be an immediate starter over Mike Peterson, whom will really help him learn Smitty's defense and we will still use Peterson in passing situations, then Peterson will be gone after 2010 season.

Paired with Loften & Nicholas, we could have a really great, young LB corps, along with some good contributers in Wire, Atkins, James.

3. Mike Johnson OG Alabama 6'5" 312 lbs.

Before you keep reading, Johson has started at every position along the offensive line at Alabam in the SECd. He has been around the speed and tough competition his entire career. He started for 3 years, and holds the all-time Alabama record for games played in. Yes he is not outstanding athletically, but are many of the good OLine in the NFL, most get the job done. Until the Falcons do something with their DE posistion (ie trade or cut someone) there are just too many players there that I think Smitty and TD want to see with a healthy Peria Jerry in the middle. Now, honestly I think if there is a solid DE that falls into the 2nd round, than I think TD will move up to get him, by using a later pick and one of our DEs, but this mock doesn't have trades, and I do really like Johnson.

3(comp). Jacoby Ford WR Clemson 5'9 186 lbs.

This guy will be a great KR/PR in the NFL, I think we could use him on the team as a 4th or 5th WR and obviously as a return specialist. His 40 time is hard to ignore at 4.28, and he can be a good pass catcher and explosive runner. I have never been high on Norwood (Mr. Glass). I honestly wish that we would have given him a 3rd round tender, and we definetly would ahve gotten something for him in return. He will not be in Atlanta by the end of the 2010 season. Snelling is a great backup, and Ford will be the future return specialist.

4. Dennis Pitta TE BYU 6'4" 245 lbs.

This guy just flat out catches everything. He is a little smaller than I would like, but just in the mold of TG. He can take a year under TG and then could really be the every down starter. I just don't see J. Peelle as a starting TE. Pitta's stats are amazing for a college TE (3 season average: 68 REC, 908 YDS, 13.4 AVG, 6 TD). Pitta also had the fastest 3-cone & 20yd shuttle at the combine which relates to quickness, which I personally like in a TE coming off the ball, and in route running for separation.

5(from DET). Myron Rolle S Florida State 6'2" 215 lbs.

His character and work ethic could be the best in this draft. We need depth at the safety posistion and I think Rolle is a football player. Plus, he could really contribute on Special Teams.

5(comp). Jeff Owens DT Georgia 6'1" 304 lbs.

His size is great, and you can never have enough depth inside. I think his strength (44 reps on Bnech) are impressive and really moved him up after a dissapointing last year. I know some are still upset there is no DE, but I think we will be okay.

6(from DET). Chris Brown RB Oklahoma 5'10" 210 lbs.

He is a solid RB and could be a contributer on special teams. I think we go RB with this pick, so you could input whomever you like here.

6. Leigh Tiffin K Alabama 6'0" 209 lbs.

Need I say more. We will either draft a kicker or sign a free agent rookie kicker to compete for a starting position. I think Tiffin kicked in big games in the SEC, and could be solid.

Flame Away!!!!!

Very nice !

I love your 1st 2 picks of Weatherspoon & M. Johnson ! M. Johnson and Jerry are my best case scenerio picks in the 3rd round if we take Weatherpoon at #19.

I'm not as high on Ford as some are. He only has straight line speed. His agility test times were alarmingly poor. In the middle rounds he may still be worth the gamble though.

Its crazy how Owens is projected to go anywhere from Round 1 to Round 5. With the depth of DTs in this draft some will go late........its just hard to guess which DTs may get the short end of the draft stick.

Great first 4 picks really like the Jacoby Ford Dennis Pitta picks speed and the best catching TE in the draft,I watched Pitta catch balls at the combine and everything thrown anywhere near him he just swallows that ball up I like that pick.

Weatherspoon yes he could well be our guy at 19.Mike Johnson I no nothing about so I'll have to look into him a bit further. But very good draft all the same.

I love this mock.Mike Johnson was working at center at his pro day which was yesterday. He is a tough customer and would be a nice replacement for McClure!!!

Glad to hear that !

I was watching "Path To The Draft" yesterday and they were covering Alabama's Pro Day but only talked about Arenas and his injury, Cody with his lost weight, & McClain's making his illness public. They said all 32 teams were there.

I know Johnson has played some LT and alot of G. Glad to hear he is working at C. I hope we snag him with our 3rd rounder. Excellent insurance policy for the O-Line and a future starter for sure ! He will be in high demand.

Thanks for all of the feedback....I know a DE is something a lot of people are screaming about drafting, but as I see it right now, we have Abraham, Davis, Anderson, Beirmann, and Sidbury. As I see it, our FO & coaching staff seem to be high on Beirmann as a passing down specialist and Sidbury was a 4th round selection a year ago. Plusthey seem to think that adding Jerry in the middle will help Anderson & Davis get a push on non passing downs. Yes, I think DE is a need, however, it does not seem feasable at this point, unless Morgan or Pierre Paul are at #19, which I don't see occurring.

Now, as for adding a CB, we have plenty of those, which seems we are inclined to give a chance at playing/starting, plus the Robinson addition makes are guys look a lot better on paper.

I really think we are gonna draft BPA in every round, unless we have a guy valued very high that falls into later rounds. Instead of Jacoby Ford, another WR could be Mardy Gilyard or Jordan Shipley that could be available in the 3rd/4th rounds....

I also wanted to point out our lack of QUALITY depth at DT. We only have Babineax (solid), Jerry (unproven, but I think will be solid), and then Trey Lewis (didn't show anything), Vance Walker (4th string at best)....That's why I included a DT in this mock.

Appreciate the thoughts......

Something else to consider is the fact that TD stated they are looking to add a edge rusher in the draft, and the fact that we added a CB in FA and we ranked like 28th in sacks. Jerry is going to help but he cant be counted on still basically being a rookie and coming off a injury.

Jaymadd, I agree with Gritz. We are not going to be able to get anybody with our pick at 19 or our other picks that will be better than Biermann, Sid and Davis. We have two young developing DEs it makes no sense to add another one. Go with the Spoon, my brotha.

Whether it is with the 1st pick or a later pick we will still add a DE in this draft.

Well that is definitley up for debate. Who is to say that Graham would not be better than Biermann Sid or Davis? When you think about it Biermann is the only one who is a real tough debate. Sid did not show much his rookie year. Davis had a bad year too even though i expect him to have a decent year this next season.

Biermann has been good, but why is he so good? A big part is his motor. He has a great motor and uses his hands pretty well. Well that is just like Graham except Graham is better against the run. So it is really up for debate if he would be better than those three or not.

Looks good, but as an Alabama fan, I'm not completely sold on Tiffin. He kicked in some high pressure situations, but he doesn't really have a great leg from long range. Playing in the dome could help that a little bit though. Nice mock, especially the Myron Rolle pick, but I don't see him staying on the board that long.

Based on this, maybe d/t is our biggest need? I like your mock and would be happy with M.John/Jerry/M.Tenet at that position.
