Recruiting starting to take off for RB Quan Bray

9:58 am March 10, 2010, by Chip Towers

Quan Bray is very excited about this recruiting stuff. He really is. He just hasn’t had a chance to really get into it yet.

A four-star running back prospect from Callaway High School in Hogansville, Bray has received upward of 25 scholarship offers so far. But up until now it hasn’t meant much more than a bunch of stacks of mail. Bray has been too busy competing in one sport or another to really break down and study why he might like School A more than School B.

“That’s what I’m trying to do now,” said Bray, who was sorting through his offers with coach Pete Wiggins on Tuesday afternoon. “I plan on visiting a couple of schools; I’m just trying to figure out which ones. I just got done playing basketball so I really haven’t had time to do it yet. Now I’m running track, but I don’t think track is going to interfere with me going places over the weekend. So I’m going to try to set up some trips.”

Bray (5-11, 180) said Alabama and Clemson were two places he intends to get to in the next couple of weeks. He also mentions Georgia and Kentucky as schools that are showing intense recruiting interest.

Bray is mentioned as a strong Alabama lean on a lot of recruiting message boards and chatrooms. He said he’s not sure where that’s coming from.

“That’s just people making assumptions,” Bray said. “You know how people get sometimes. I’ve got a couple of friends at Alabama. I have friends at Georgia, too. I’m going to take all my visits and see what’s best for me.”

Bray said his recruitment, slow and steady last fall, picked up considerable steam in the last month or so.

“Actually it has kicked into overdrive here lately,” he said. “A lot of mail is starting to come in, letters, cards, posters and stuff. It’s a little overwhelming. Sometimes you don’t even open it. There’s so many you can’t sit there and open it and all or you’ll be there all day.”

That’s why Bray plans to narrow the field soon. “I’m going to try to get it down to five pretty soon. and go from there,” he said.

It’s easy to see why all the fuss. As a quarterback last season, Bray had more than 1,000 yards in both rushing and passing. That was the third consecutive season he’d broken the 1,000-yard barrier.

“Quan has started for us since his freshman year,” Callaway coach Pete Wiggins said. “He rushed for over 1,000 yards at tailback that year. As a sophomore he rushed for right at 1,100 yards at tailback. Then this year as a junior we moved him to quarterback and he rushed for over 1,000 and threw for over 1,000. He works extremely hard in the weight room, he’s got good grades, he’s a three-sport kid. And he’s a humble kid. That’s why these colleges like him.”

He has certainly been a winner for Callaway. He led the Cavaliers into the quarterfinals of the Class AA state football playoffs as a quarterback last fall. As a guard on the basketball team, he helped Callaway reach the final eight of the basketball playoffs before it was ousted this past weekend.

As for recruiting, Bray is competitive about that, too. He knows Isaiah Crowell of Carver-Columbus is generally considered the top running back in the state and he’s aware of all the good backs across the South this year. Bray believes he should be mentioned in the same breath.

“A lot of people have a lot of opinions,” Bray said. “That’s where I want to be, at the top with the best players. That’s why I put all this work into it, to be at the top.”
