FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Atlanta Falcons today signed cornerback Brent Grimes to an exclusive rights contract and waived wide receiver James Swinton.

In 16 games (eight starts) last season, Grimes compiled 67 tackles (58 solo), 13 passes defensed and one fumble recovery while leading the team in interceptions with six. The Shippensburg graduate also picked off four passes in the final three contests of the season. Grimes was originally signed as a rookie free agent by Atlanta on May 16, 2006. He has tallied 114 career tackles, seven interceptions, one sack, one fumble recovery and 19 passes defensed.

Swinton was signed by the Falcons to the practice squad on Dec. 15, 2009 where he spent the remaining three games of the season.

He honestly does really deserve a new contract. He plays his heart out every week. My buddy went to Shippensburg with Grimes and said that he couldnt believe how athletic the guy was and that he's one of the nicest guys he's ever met. He played great the last half of the season and even if he does lose his starting job I'm sure he will play a bunch at Nickel and provide excellent depth at CB.

Way to go Grimes!

Congrats to Grimes...isnt he a draftee from the Petrino era?. If he is, then something good came outta it.

I want to say he was an undrafted free agent. Grimes was signed 3 days after Pertino became the head coach so it was under his watch. Even a blind squarrel find a nut every now and then!!
