Buzz up!

Georgia's search for a new defensive coordinator passed the five-week mark Wednesday, and two coaches involved in postseason games appear to be in play for the job.

Dallas Cowboys defensive line coach Todd Grantham has been approached by Georgia to be its coordinator, the Dallas Morning News reported on its Web site in its Cowboys blog, citing a source.

Grantham has been linked to the job recently elsewhere in the media.

Grantham, 43, has coached in the NFL since 1999 and is in his second season with the Cowboys. The Cowboys have a playoff game Saturday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Grantham was defensive coordinator for the NFL's Cleveland Browns under Romeo Crennel from 2005-07 before being fired.

The Pulaski, Va., native played offensive guard and tackle at Virginia Tech from 1984-88 and coached from 1990-95. He also coached at Michigan State under Nick Saban from 1996-98.

Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, the former Georgia defensive back, also spoke to reporters in California on Tuesday about the Georgia opening.

Coach Mark Richt has been looking for a replacement after he fired Willie Martinez and two assistants on Dec. 2.

"I really haven't talked to Mark much," Smart told the Mobile (Ala.) Press-Register. "To say I said no to Mark, he has not offered me anything. That's not really accurate. To be honest, with this game coming up, I haven't even thought about it."

Alabama plays Texas Thursday in Pasadena in the BCS title game, but left open the possibility that he would listen to Georgia.

"You don't ever know what's going to happen, but I certainly am excited about the opportunity to be back at Alabama," Smart said. "We've got a lot of good players coming back."
