JKH5785
I was watching Mike Smith's presser, and he said something that kinda struck a cord with me. He said that the opponent dictates what our offense and defense will do on the field, a "punch / counter punch". While I do agree that this can be the right gameplan to follow at times during the game, I believe we are a better team when we play our game, and would be better if tried to impose our will and do the dictating.Sunday seemed like a prime example of getting pushed around, and being dictated in every aspect of what we were trying to do. ltstorm2
I think that philosophy isn't bad for the offense, but on defense it sucks. We still don't have our complete personnel that we want on the field on defense.
Slimm
basically i agree with the post above me....on offense it would be stupid for us to run all the time when they are stopping it....but on D i agree with what you said
JKH5785
Oh I agree, and by impose our will, I don't mean run the ball down there throat even when it's not working. Mularkey needs to open the playbook up, it looked like he brought 10 plays with him. I just think that when you play a team like the PATS in Foxboro, that you have to bring something they havn't seen. Looked like we were running the same plays we have been running since last season. Belli knew exactly what was coming.I don't understand the alienation of Gonzo. At times they had him bracketed, but even the commentators said that Pats weren't doing anything special in coverage against him. He was the best reciever on the Chiefs so you know he was gameplanned against, yet he still had big games. Our offense has too many weapons to fizzle out just because one player was gameplanned for.Dallas Clark, and Jason Witten get game planned for and still have big games. If Gonzo was that locked down, I feel like there should have been someone that definitly wasn't.Felt like we should have went into the no huddle offense sooner in the 4th Q, and why punt on 4th and 3 with 7mins left behind two scores. Belli was very worried about our team and it was obvious by the way he was playing cutthroat football, going for it on 4th and 3 on their 25yrd line in 3rd Q.I want to see a more dominating offense. A powerful, imposing offense.I feel like we should spread the ball around more, Booker has been big, more opportunities for him would help. Our offense needs to not be so conservative, It feels like they are overthinking their strategy. That swing pass to the side only works every now and then, but it's called very often. We need to be more intimidating through the air, the ground game will come. Last year it seems like we were airing it out alittle more.
Ice74
you know, there used to be a head coach round these parts, that said, we are going to do what we do best, and not change the play calling based on the defense and being in the red zone.think it had something to do with 4 WR's and 1 RB, June Jonesgotta love that team of coaches we hadJune JonesBobby April Mouse Davis

atljbo
You impose your will in the run game and you take wht you can get in the pass game..... If Matt Ryan fore it down the field and throw pick offs .... He is Jake Delhomme and he sucks...Coach Smith is 100% right..... We are a power running team so i feel likee impose our will.... Michael Turner ran for over 1600 yards last year....You gotta take what you can get tho....If you keep running the ball with 9 in the box and its not successful then you are crazy..... They are giving you 1 on 1 coverage so take what they are giving you... That's just like if a team is playing their 2 safeties deep then run the ball... They are giving you the run. JKH5785
It's not going to be a pick your poison offense if we don't spread the ball around. Just an offense with alot of weapons. I don't want Matt Ryan to be recklass, but airing the ball out doesn't strictly have to be labeled as taking chances. Brady aired it out against, I wouldn't consider him taking chances. They say by running you open up the pass, or by passing you open up the run. You have to be able to impose your will to do either or for this to work. Michael Turnover
I agree with the OP. I think Mike Smith left his testicles in Atlanta. The coaches were scared. Therefore the player were. Someone forgot to tell them, that this isn't the dynasty from years past.

JKH5785
seemed like D. Orlando was trying to push Smith into admitting that we didn't impose our will. Maybe that is what made it stand out so much when I was watching the presser.
Tazz77
This quote from Smitty was in a thread yesterday and of all the things he said the we let the other team dictate our plays really stuck out. I really dont think it has to do with any one facet of our team offense or defense, nor does it have to be passing verses running. There are passing teams that know they do it well and so they come out throwing just like there are running teams that are going to impose there will running. There are also teams that are all defense all the time be it blitz crazy or laid back. I am not concerned if Smitty thinks we need to counter punch so to speak because we are a young team just coming together but I dont want to forever be that team who will just take what is given to them. And hopefully as we mature on offense and defense we can dictate both apsects. I think thats what great teams do they dont accept what the other teams allow them to have they take! The Pats did that they didnt care if we were going to do this or that they had their game plan and the executed! Thats what I want to be able to do at some point. RockPaperScissors
I think he meant it more like, "take what the defense gives you".
