Guest Gritz
I have been mulling over this upcoming game with the resurgent 49ers. I really believe that the outcome of this game will determine the course the rest of our season takes.I believe that with a relatively young team the psychological make up of the coaches and players takes on a bigger role than it does with primarily veteran-led teams like the Patriots, Giants and Steelers. If this team is angry about their respective performances yesterday and comes out flying to the ball (like we saw a lot of against the Fins) then I believe we will still have a great season and make the playoffs. If, on the other hand we excuse yesterday's loss to factors other than poor game planning and execution and play lackadaisical against the 49ers we are going to be in trouble.I for one, believe that we are going to pass this test. Last year after our first loss to the Sucs we came back to the Dome and manhandled the Chiefs 38-14. After our next loss to the Panties we rebounded with the win at Green Bay 27-24 and the excellent last second win against the Bears at home 22-20.My point is that in the short history this coaching staff has here in Atlanta they have shown that they don't allow 2 poor performances in a row.Let's see what we have this year. I think we'll know after this game......

A little more rhythm and better play calling (more deep passes?) and all will be well on that front. They also got two weeks to hone thier no huddle offense. But it all means nothting if we don't make the correct adjustments on Defense. While it sucks having to go with a bye week with the taste of a loss in our mouths. Right now I think its just what the doctor ordered.

bossFALCONâ„¢
we have the 2nd longest streak of not losing b2b games in the NFL at 20. this is a game we should win, although the niners are much improved. their O is lacking and their WRs are not all that good (which will help our corners). their oline is pretty bad and abe and biermann should have good games. maybe even babs too.on the flipside they have a pretty **** good defense but our offensive weapons should be too much for them. i'd really like to see some deep balls spread around out there, some no hudde and i'd like to see roddy have a big game. i just don't think we should or will lose this game. SWIFT HITTER
Gritz I agree with everything you said..This team will bounce back as bad as we played yesterday we were in that game til half. The Pats needed that game more then we did and played like it. This coaching staff so far has always bounced back and bounced back strong. What needs to do this off week is kick start this running game and start taking shots downfield to open up this offense. We have become to relying on 7-15 yard passes and runs off guards. We need to do more pitchouts and tosses in the running game . Mularky also needs to throw in a trick play or 2 as well and be creative like he once was.The 49ers offense dont scare me even with Gore. Gore is a good back but were not having to worry about a premier wr like we had to with Smith and Moss to stop Van Gord from birnging pressure cause he was worried about 1 on 1 situations. I have full confidence our defense will have a good game vs this 49er offense and we need to get the offense rolling as well .. If Turner is stuggling early spread the carries around..Lets call some screens to Norwood.Send Roddy downfield and even Booker.
The Donâ„¢
We keep getting told that our offense is a Ferrari. We've been driving it like it's a Yugo.Good post. Mularkey has been way too conservative with this offense. He needs to let Ryan air it out when Turner can't run. He needs to let Ryan throw some deep throws. We need more throws to Roddy, b/c he has not made the big play yet.

crankdatfalcon
I don't know if we're the type of team yet where we will get any easy wins crank......true enough but when you take a talent like frank gore out of the 49ers offense, that basically leaves them one dimensional. Im sure they have back up backs, but no one like gore. JA55 should abuse shaun hill all day long like he did delhommie..
TeamPlayer1
Gritz,I to am curious to see our response to the Patriots loss. No question that some self doubt will creep in to the young psyches. This is what I want to see:1) No huddle offense for the first couple of series.2) Rush at least 5 at all times on defenseThat's not too much to ask. Brewcrew
They showed a stat before the last game that the Falcons have the third best streak without losing back-to-back games at 19, behind only Pittsburg at 20 games and New England (go figure!) at 41 games. I think that shows just how good Mike Smith and Co. are. They have proven that they will have their guys ready to play after a loss. And with two weeks to prepare, I would be very dissappointed if we don't win this game.
Finally
I just realized your avatar changes.Right now I see a regressive trend on defense. In 3 weeks we have returned to the preseason level performances. I would just be happy to see it start moving back in the other direction. The Donâ„¢
I just realized your avatar changes.Right now I see a regressive trend on defense. In 3 weeks we have returned to the preseason level performances. I would just be happy to see it start moving back in the other direction. If you noticed, our DL had a great game against Miami, and our other 7 benefited greatly.... Vs. Carolina and NE, our DL got very minimal pressure and our back 7 did not look too good did they? This scheme relies on pressure from the front 4, and if we don't get it, we struggle on D overall. I hope this bye week means some adjustments for this D, b/c we need it....Other side note, with ALL these weapons we have on this offense, Mularkey needs to use it more and stop being so conservative. I'm not all that worried about the offense. You go, Gritz! As everyone knows, a big part of being a successful Head Coach is being a motivator / mentor. After such an ugly loss, lacksadasical effort (IMO) and questionable game planning and strategy (again, IMO), it will be a true test of Mike Smith and his staff to get these guys mean and hungry again. They have the bye week to heal up (Norwood, etc), and then get to work figuring out how to mash SF into the ground. Win or lose, I will be very interested in how the Falcons approach the 49er game. sdogg
He did reduce the playbook this year actually...When I first read about that, i thought that was a huge mistake. With all our weapons, we need to be more creative and expand the playbook.
