Falcons' opener vs. Miami sold out

By D. ORLANDO LEDBETTER

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Flowery Branch - The Falcons' season opener against Miami Dolphins has been sold out and there will be no local television blackout, the team announced on Thursday.

After going 11-5 and reaching the playoffs last season, Falcons president Rich McKay recently said there was little threat of blackouts this season. However, some teams around the league are struggling to sell tickets for normally packed stadiums.

Minnesota, San Diego and Jacksonville have publicly acknowledged that blackouts are possible. Under NFL rules, games are blacked out in the home team's TV market if not sold out 72 hours prior to kick off. Since single-game sales fluctuate with the home team's record and the visiting team's appeal, season-ticket sales are key to reducing the blackout risk.

Coming off a 4-12 season, the Falcons needed some local sponsors to step forward and purchase tickets to ensure a sellout of last season's home opener against Detroit.
