A day after deciding to keep Drew Brees and Mark Brunell as the only quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, the Saints added a quarterback to their practice squad. They signed Chase Daniel on Sunday night and he'll run the scout team.

He'll also have the inside track on moving to the 53-man roster if anything happens to Brees or Brunell. Daniel played at Missouri and was in camp with the Redskins this summer.

The Atlanta Falcons weren’t done with their defensive secondary when they traded for cornerback Tye Hill last week.

They announced Sunday night they have agreed to terms with veteran defensive back Brian Williams, who spent the last three seasons with Jacksonville, including two seasons with Atlanta coach Mike Smith, who previously was the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator.

Williams has experience at safety and cornerback.

“Brian Williams is a veteran player who gives us versatility in the secondary with the ability to play both cornerback and safety,” general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. “Adding Brian to our roster is consistent with our plan to improve our team when the opportunity presents itself.”

We reported earlier that the Carolina Panthers had claimed defensive tackle Ra’Shon “Sonny’’ Harris and running back Tyrell Sutton off waivers Sunday.

But sometimes it’s just as interesting and enlightening to see who teams try to claim, but don’t end up getting. The Panthers put in three other claims Sunday.

They put in unsuccessful claims on defensive tackle Vance Walker, defensive end Derreck Robinson and defensive tackle Antonio Dixon.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers obviously weren’t set on their roster when they made their cuts Sunday. They just added two guys Sunday afternoon.

The Bucs claimed defensive back William Middleton off waivers from Atlanta and defensive end Maurice Evans off waivers from the New York Giants. Tampa Bay also put in claims for five other players (cornerback Brandon Anderson, defensive end Tim Crowder and defensive back Marcus McCauley, punter A.J. Trapasso and defensive back Marvin White), but weren’t able to get them.
