Why does the NFL have the rule about the 3rd string QB?

I don't know why you have to deactivate any players for a game. Seems like a dumb idea to have to sit 7 guys that your paying for no apparent reason.

again I think that only apllies to the QB position,

if you can interchange safeties and DL all day long, every play, 1st, 2nd ,3rd, heck even 4th

but once that 3rd string QB is in the game, the 1st and 2nd string QB's can not re-enter the game

not that it really matters, IT IS THE 3RD STRING QB, but still they must have had a pretty strong reason against it

teams rarely keep 3 active...I think what your talking about is when the 3rd guy is inactive

So that when people started threads about DJ playing in the wildcat last year we could simply tell them it's against the rules.

you can avoid the rule by only dressing 45 people. if you have 45 people active for the game you can put the 3rd string qb in whenever you want. the NFL however gives you the option of dressing a 46th man and this slot can only be used as an "emergency" qb and then you have the restrictions on when that 46th man can play. this 46th man is counted as being inactive.

The NFL QB Sub Rule

"Teams will be permitted an Active List of 45 players and an Inactive List of eight players for each regular-season and postseason game. Provided that a club has two quarterbacks on its 45-player Active List, a third quarterback from its Inactive List is permitted to dress for the game, but if he enters the game during the first three quarters, the other two quarterbacks are thereafter prohibited from playing."

The third quarterback is the 46th player, so you don't have to waste a 45th spot on a guy who will, in all likelihood, never play. It used to be if the third guy went in anytime, the other two couldn't play, but they changed it a few years back.

Basically, the third guy is for an emergency. And keeping the other two guys from playing makes sure you keep his use to emergency situations.

So a team can have 3 active QB on the 45 active and play them any which way, or they can have 2 QB and a dressed 3rd QB at 46 and if that 46 guy plays in the first 3 quarters, the other 2 qb cannot re-enter.
