Atlanta Falcons Draft History

Christopher Reina. 14th April, 2009 - 8:54 pm

Thomas Dimitroff is a native Canadian and cut his teeth under Bill Belichick and has had immediate success both through the draft and free agency.

Various Notes

- The Falcons have an impressive history drafting quarterbacks with Matt Ryan, Matt Schaub, Michael Vick and dating all the way back to Brett Favre.

- Roddy White was an excellent late first round pick in 2005.

- Sam Baker's presence as a rookie left tackle was an underrated aspect of the 2008 turnaround. Curtis Lofton also was an immediate starter out of that 2008 draft class.

- First round picks Vick, T.J. Duckett and DeAngelo Hall are each gone already.

Our draft history sucks.

I checked out from 98 on a few days ago, and we have a few pro bowlers: Brook, Kerney, Vick, Crump, White, and Hall. 6 pro bowlers in 10 years is a major problem with our team. Too many guys who just didn't pan out after we drafted them. We just had bad picks, and I think about half of our PB team is debatable. Hall was cut from Oakland, Crump is non existent in Tennessee, and Vick is whatever.

All in all, we had one of our best seasons with only White on the roster. We just might have the right thing going.

I think 2000 and 2003 were way worse than 1997. Booker, Santiago and Collins all made important contributions to the 1998 NFC Championship team. And to Tony Graziani's credit, how many QBs taken ahead of him have gone on to become Arena league stars? ;)

Henri Crockett, LB (4th, 100th) - Another decent guy. Played well for us.

Marcus Wimberly, DB (5th, 133rd) - Bad. Real bad.

Calvin Collins, G (6th, 180th) - Actually a decent contributor. Played in our SB.

Tony Graziani, QB (7th, 204th) - Tore it up in Arena League.

Chris Bayne, DB (7th, 222nd) - Don't remember him, but I assume he stunk.

Wow. Good memory. :o

I'd say our 02 draft was the worst. We picked TJ Duckett while Ed Reed was on the board. Other than him, everyone was a scrub. Even still, Duckett can barely land a backup job now.

Shaffer was a turnstile, but he's still in the league. He's a Bear now, I think.

I remember most of these players.... Although MJ is the only one from the 04 draft on the team that was a good draft for us IMO. I still don't think we got a "steal" on the Matt Schaub trade. He is still young and if it weren't for injuries I think he would have made a trip to the PB. I always liked Schaub. I root for the Texans when they don't play us. I also like them cause they are the other team in Texas and I hate the Cowgirls!

We have had some stinkers that is for sure. To me 2003 is the worst recent year but I guess some of that is open for interpretation. In my opinion, if a player leaves before their contract year, even if they are traded, it counts against us. We are supposed to find players that fit our system and will be on our roster for at least the 4 years. I don't care if they later turn out to be a Favre, it still counts against us because he never made a positive contribution to our team. While I do not completely blame management for trading him he never did anything for us so we failed. We should have made a different choice on draft day or tried to develop him more.
