How do I delete a malicious program from my computer?

Recommended Posts

Okay, here's the deal.

1. I'm a banker, not a computer genius.

2. I've got this malicious program on my computer that I cannot delete.

3. The program is called "Personal Antivirus" and it's mimicking legitimate anti-virus software by continually displaying fake warning messages where the icon tray is.

4. I'm running Windows XP and I've tried deleting the file via the Add/Remove Programs options, but I don't even see the program listed there.

5. I was running Internet Explorer 7 when the program downloaded.

6. I need step-by-step instructions on how to find this program and delete it once and for all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

BB

I did do the switch to Firefox and am running that exclusively now. How do I perform the 'restore'?

restore restores you computer to a previously auto save time. it is pretty much like retoring your computer to a previous time to before.

go to start up menu, then accessories, then system tools. once you get to the restore menu, then pick a date before you had the virus problem and it should solve the problem. i would look into free online virus protection form download.com

sorry if it is not exact im running vista right now, so i dont completely remember xp.

Thanks, man. I'm running AVG now and have since purchased Spyware Doctor also. I've run complete scans using both, but neither one detected the malicious software.

Good luck bro, and hopefully every thing goes well. I had the same problem a few years back, but it was so bad that i had to complete a system recovery my comp and i lost all my music on my comp.

Okay, I'm back. Running the system restore worked and the app has been removed. :D Thanks, GEORGIAban. I appreciate the advice and will stick to my promise to never ban you (though I can't speak for the other Mods.)

That is two mods down, i mean * cough**cough*. im kidding man. i know i come on here and ask for help all the time and i was just returning the favor. Now that you are running Firefox( welcome to the club), you should get Ad Block Plus.

here is a link:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

just helps block ads and other pop ups from downloading on your comp or showing up.

dont forget to run the AVG and other virus protection now that your comp is cleaned.

Whenever you see a pop-up for anything while you are browsing the Internet - especially something that says 'A virus has been found, click here to remove it', don't click anywhere on the popup window - don't click any close buttons, etc. Right-click on the pop-up's button on the task bar and select close. If you can't do that, go into Task Manager and find the popup and kill it from there.

download and run malewarebytes and security task manager. start your pc in safe mode turn off system restore and run the scans. that should do it.

Malwarebytes is THE BEST program. It is the only program that I have come across the DETECTS and REMOVES that Antispyware 2010 (and its variants) malware.

While your computer is running okay Bankerbird, I would still download this free program for future problems.

I think that's what happened to me. I clicked on the pop-up and the app downloaded from there, but I've learned my lesson.

Whatever companies or people that are putting stuff like this out there need to be locked in a room for an hour with 20 people who have had there computers trashed.

my computer got hit pretty bad awhile back neither AVG or Trend Micro could remove the problem. Malwarebytes cleaned up everything the other two missed. Great program and it scans pretty quickly compared to some of the other programs out there
