US captain released from pirates

breaking news

The captain of a US container ship taken hostage by Somali pirates has been released, the US Navy has said.

According to initial reports, three pirates were killed in the operation to free Captain Richard Phillips. Another is in custody.

Capt Phillips is said to be unhurt and on the USS Bainbridge, a warship sent to track the pirates holding him.

He was taken hostage last Wednesday after pirates briefly hijacked his ship, the Maersk Alabama.

Media reports say Capt Phillips' family was informed of his release several hours ago.

Somali elders had been trying to resolve the standoff but most recent reports suggested the talks had stalled.

I wonder if one of the SEAL teams were involved. My guess is we would never know.
Navy Seals successfully pulled off the rescue. It happened a little after midnight eastern standard time.

Stupid pirates. The SEAL's probably had them in their sights, just waiting for the perfect moment. Then it came. Should have had the hostage below deck.

:P

I called it!

Yah its all good that he got rescued ... but i feel sorry for the next American ship that gets hijacked... they will take it out on thme.

i feel sorry for the next pirate who thinks he can take an american hostage. they will get dominated like these guys did.

good job by the SEALS.

edit:

on second thought, "i feel sorry" is a very poor choice of words.

I feel like I keep missing something! It literally puzzles me, how do four men on a ship smaller than the SS Minnow take a 17000 ton ship! They should be allowed to blow their little greedy azzes clear off the water! Hopefully this sets the tone that you start messing with American ships, you are going to get DEALT with!

most American flagged vessels dont have armed security....so when a handful of people in a rowboat and some AK's get on board, they are outmatched

it seems like a simple solution to arm these merchant ships, there has got to be some reason it hasnt been done yet, because you know there are merc groups that would take that job in a second

I wonder if it has to do with insurance and costs, or if it is a regulation. I read that this particular ship was traveling at half speed to save on fuel costs. Had it been traveling at top speed it couldn't have been caught. Is cost cutting the culprit for under-protecting these ships? Or is there some international governmental regulation that forbids non-war vessels from carrying armaments?

I just heard on the news that it was Navy SEAL snipers that got the pirates. The report did continue on and state that there are over 200 other hostages (obviously not American) across the Indian Ocean. Hopefully this incident shores up international resolve to deal with this situation. I have heard about the piracy before, but never in this kind of detail, prior to the kidnapping of the Americans.
