Miles says Shepard will get a look at receiver

Posted by ESPN.com's Chris Low

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Russell Shepard remains a quarterback at heart, but he's also a playmaker.

And that's exactly why the much ballyhooed true freshman will get some snaps at receiver in Saturday's scrimmage, LSU coach Les Miles said Thursday following a rain-shortened practice.

"He has to be an advantage for us," Miles said. "Right now, we're trying to find out if he's an advantage for us at receiver or not. I know with the ball in his hands he makes people miss, so that's what we're trying to accomplish."

Miles said the Tigers have already experimented some in practice with Shepard at receiver. He's also one of the guys they plan to use in their direct snap "Wildcat" package.

But Miles said Shepard has also steadily improved as a passer. That's after opening spring practice and not looking particularly sharp throwing the ball.

"It's better than it's been," Miles said. "Today's advance is better than that first practice. If he continues to improve, he's going to be a good quarterback."

Shepard, rated by Scouts Inc. as the No. 1 athlete in the country last year, has already made believers out of his teammates.

"Wait until the season," LSU senior receiver Brandon LaFell said. "He's going to surprise a lot of people when he breaks the pocket or whether he's at receiver catching the ball and making plays."

Miles said all four scholarship quarterbacks would play in Saturday's scrimmage at Tiger Stadium, the first full scrimmage of the spring.

He made it clear what he was looking for from his team.

"Our veterans are improved," Miles said. "They really need to close the gap between good and great. That kind of improvement needs to take place."

With nasty weather gripping the Baton Rouge area, the Tigers had to cut short Thursday's practice. Finishing up in the indoor complex wasn't an option because a portion of the roof had been ripped off early Thursday morning by a storm that hit the entire city. Some people were still without power Thursday evening.

Miles looked over to where rain was pelting the artificial turf inside the indoor complex and gritted his teeth. It's going to be the latter part of spring practice before the Tigers will be able to practice in the indoor facility again.

"It's amazing," Mile said. "This building has been through a lot with [hurricanes] Katrina, Rita, Gustav, virtually everything that's come along ... and this one hit us pretty good."

no.. he was a 5 star qb and he shouldn't have been.. everyone said the same thing regarding his ranking, but a few fell in love with how much of an athlete he was. the guy is a great athlete, but he is no 5 star qb..

Okay, wow a couple of days in spring practice and he is already moving position man did Rivals get this one wrong, thank God money is not on the line with these rankings. Was there even a 5* ATH for the 09 Class? I know Denard Robinson was a 4* ATH and he was ranked like top 10.

This was an argument all the time when rival's came out with their rankings.. they even didn't all agree, but the consensus wins. he is a great athlete, but he is not a 5 star qb. he may turn out to be very good at that position, but he would have to make a huge monumental improvement at that position. ray ray armstrong was one ATH on rivals.
