Orlando Pace released?

He was cut from the Rams, has anyone signed him yet? I wouldn't mind throwing a few million his way if he still has it in him. He could be an upgrade at RT.

The only reason why I wouldn't is because it would take away one of our compensatory picks for 2010. There is a reason why we haven't been major players in FA - we should get a nice amount of comp picks for losing Boley, Milloy, and Brooking.

In my mind that is why it is taking so long for us to sign L.J. Smith -- TD is probably deciding if some added help in the passing game is worth losing one of those compensatory draft picks.

so we can lose picks by signing FAs? That's news to me. So it's really a possibility we get multiple 3rd round picks?

Not normal draft picks - I'm talking about compensatory draft picks. The league gives out compensatory draft picks if a team loses more qualifying FAs then it gains (a pick for every FA). Right now it looks like we will get 2 because of the Peterson signing, and only 1 extra if we sign L.J. Smith. I don't know what round it will be, but there is a good chance that it will be a 3rd round pick if Boley performs at his 07 level.

Players who are were released from their previous contracts do not count as qualifiying FAs, so signing Pace would not figure into our equation. Additionally, playing time and contract size are factors on both sides of this equation as well, so if our big 5 (Foxy, Boley, Brook, Gravy, Milloy) all play well and max out their compensation packages for next season, and Romburg doesn't see much actual playing time, we could still net b/w 2 and 4 comp picks for 2010. Besides L.J., I just don't see who we could acquire via FA in the next few weeks. Maybe an OLineman, but I doubt it.
